A couple of things. I made my first few knives with a B+D “PowerFile” (12mm - 1/2” belt, you can get air powered versions). Does a great job with curvy blades. To make the metal hold an edge (the whole point of a knife) you need to quench and temper it. Essentially heat the metal until glowing cherry red, and then dunk it in a suitable quench fluid (most likely an oil like Parkes for this project, each steel will have a specific quench agent you need to research), this is the Quench process. The blade will then be very hard, but VERY brittle, so don’t drop it. You need to temper it for two 1 hour sessions in an oven at 100’c / 210’f. This will take out the brittle nature, leaving you with a blade that can hold an edge.

Great work. Just cut out and shaped a blade from an old circular saw blade yesterday. Took forever but it looks pretty good. Still have to drill the handle and make some nice handle scales and hopefully it'll come out nice.

You did great, Chief, considering that you went for a fairly advanced and more complex knife design after only one previous project, lol. And it's a perfectly functional and practical knife design, good for slashing and chopping meat and kindling.

Nice work Jimbo! You need to soften the hard steel saw blade first to work it by putting it in a forge or a heat treat oven and slowly cool it down afterwards so it won't crack. Then it will be a lot easier to cut and remove all the scratches. And when you're done you need to harden the steel again.

Hi Jimbo, you did really great on the knife making. I actually really like how you made the knife. Knife turned out great! I am actually planning making knives myself with no power tools, and all by hand. All i know is that it’s ok if your knife doesn’t turn out perfect, at least if your happy the way it turn out then that’s good! And i am also planning on making knives with maybe only saw blades. You should do more of knife making videos, you did great!

It's a nice knife that you ended up making there. I've done the same thing I've made knives out of angle iron and saw blades. I typically use (ipe) wood for the handle. It's an extremely dense wood from South America. Mainly Brazil. It's difficult to work with but looks great when you're done

I've worked with padauk on my wood lathe making pens. I like it, but I advise the use of a respirator, because breathing the dust is like inhaling chili powder. maybe that's just my reaction to it since dust from exotic wood affects people differently.

Don’t know if its been suggested yet. You should take the other saw blade you have, clean it up a bit, mount some pins or something and turn it into a display holder for your knife. BTW I think the knife turned out great. I’m a woodworker and have a ton of old 12” miter blades and am trying my hand at making one now!!

Sir the reason the blade wouldn’t hold an edge is because you needed to temper the metal. What I mean is hear the metal till it is glowing red and dip it in motor oil and then you need to bake it after that. This will hardened the metal and it will hold an edge

You need a Burr King 1" wide belt grinder. They make belt grinders specifically designed for knife makers but for a shop like yours I recommend the basic 1"x42" model. About two grand without accessories. I use mine in both wood and metal fabrication. Once you have one you will never let it go. I have no connection to Burr King. Before I got mine I would occasionally drive across town to a friend's shop to use his.

You've got a nice shape going there Jimbo! Though perhaps next time you could try and aneal the blade, wich makes is better to grind in the bevels and drill the holes. Followed by hardening and tempering the blade. The fact that you could file and drill the steel shows the steel is too soft for making a proper knife with. Heat treatment will ensure you have the best steel caracteristics for a knife, and it will actually hold an edge. Perhaps look up "one brick forge" for a great and cheap way to heat treat your blades. I use sawblades quite a lot when I make these small and handy puukko knives, wich are great for woodworking and carving. Also, an easy and cheap way of getting your bevels in your knifeblanc, is with a little 1x30 beltsander, or a powerfile. Ones you get the hang of making knives, it can be quite addictive 😆. Ow, and that wood is pronounced "padook". But like I said, you got a great shape of blade going, and with some extra efford you can get yourself a very usable handmade tool that you can use for many years to come

That’s a good looking knife, imo, and dont know if you have used it for anything, or ever planned to when making it, but for somebody’s first time making a knife, kudos to you! I love that wood species too. One thing ive noticed that u dont always practice in your vids, and i wish you’d do more of (since thousands of people watch your videos), is to work safer. Im talking specifically about having your hand “downstream”, if u will, from the chisel, directly in its path of cutting/shaving material. Please find a better, aka SAFER, way of holding down workpieces when tooling them, even if you arent putting an extreme amount of pressure into it, since things like chisels dont need much (given that u keep your tools sharp and ready, and we already know how dangerous it is to NOT keep blades sharp, also)! Thanks for sharing, and have a great rest of your day.
