I've watched this about 5x's now and it's interesting and telling to note that Gales is actually inventing new shit on the spot and at times paints himself into deviously intricate rhythmic circles from which he doesn't always quite extract himself. I think this is evidence of a higher form of artistry: this willingness to take chances and thus push your playing ability though to a new level. Dig this deceptively simple timing trap that trips him up for a second (I'll start it a little ways beforehand to show how it develops): 5:41

Great post, I've been thinking the same thing. He's on a higher level of expression like Clapton talked of SRV. Speaking of, and it may be controversial to say this, but after listening to Gales I find SRV not as exciting. My only nitpick, and it is just a nitpick. Is knowing when to not play. Like at 4:54 it would've been nice to hear the bassist finish that ONE lick he pulls without Eric talking over him. Nothing unusual, just typical lead guitarist stuff of overplaying sometimes.
@tmatheson546 жыл бұрын
Look out here comes Eric. He engages his guitar, his strings, his fellow band member (s), his audience. Everything. He just seems to be one nice guy. One cool cat that can energize a guitar. Yet he strings his guitar reverse from most other guitarists. Say what? I love this guy!

I've Been playing Blues on electric guitar for about 9 months. Started out for 6 months before hand playing acoustic and still don't know how to read music, only play by ear. (Only 15 months playing) It's people like gales,Bonamasa, Marcus King,Gary Clark jr that keep me playing. Let me tell ya, you don't need to be able to read music, play with your heart and soul and use it as therapy. Never care what someone else thinks and most of all have fun and enjoy it. You'll find out over time skills and little secret artifacts on playing. I record myself playing Everytime so I can figure out what I can and need to change to be better. I'm to a point where I want to start semi-performing (busking,parks,jam nights) but I have a nervous factor keeping me back. I figure out it will come in time and keep practicing.

At 4:01 he does a nice lick, so nice in fact, it took it! Thank you, Mr Gales. The other day, I went to my favorite local guitar shop. During the drive over there, I was listening to Eric; not to mention that ive been immersed in stuff for about 5 yrs now. I took it upon myself to get a better handle of his playing, so i pulled a left-handed tele off the store's wall and started playing it upside down. *BTW, its clean sound, especially being plugged into hotrod delux, w the drive half way sounded crisp and bright, yet w some dirtiness in the mids. Anyway! In short: I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EVERYONE try doing this! It steered me away from being patternish in my leads. Plus, the new licks i came across were easily translatable to my standard, right-handed, orthadox style. It takes a while to get usex to, but give it a shot, because all in all its a game changer. And no, it is much different than tinkering about w various tunings. #foreverchanged
