Does burnishing the brass make it harder? Yes. Brass is work hardened. Bending it in the first place hardened the bends. That's why it needs to be annealed before repairing it, otherwise the metal will break. Instrument repair seems to be part metallurgy and part sculpture. I have to admire anyone who can do it.
