Have never cooked a pot pie in microwave and only a couple times in an oven but never a toaster oven. The one I bought is bigger so I allowed extra time to bake. The carton it came in was like cardboard. On the box directions it said could microwave or toaster oven cook. I followed your direction and used my thermometer first time. It worked out great. I cooked two pot pies in preheated toaster oven 400 degrees and covered the edges of crust and also an aluminum foil tent like yours for 40 min and took off the aluminum foil and finished cooking the crust for about 5 min. Then used my never been used thermometer. I’ve made pot pies a couple time before and the bottom crust was always raw and it made me think the middle was raw too. So I cut it all up and cooked it more so today I was looking for a better way to cook one using a meat thermometer. That’s how I got directed to your site. I learned a lot. And my pot pies came out great. I let them cool out of the toaster oven. I learned a lot. Thanks so much.

Reminds me of 2009 era KZbin, but genuinely good idea for using aluminum foil to cover the pot pies as if they're lasagna. I looked this up cause my Marie Callender's pot pies said they can't be put in the toaster oven and I definitely don't wanna heat up my big oven for this.
@robertknight46722 ай бұрын
A lot of toaster oven manufacturers say cooking in a foil pan is fine but they don't recommend lining the bottom of the crumb tray with foil or covering food with foil saying that the toaster oven can get too hot but a lot of people seem to be able to do it without issue.

@bbpeeker6 жыл бұрын
I just cooked 2 in my toaster oven for the 1st time! I took them out of the 'cooking pans' and covered a metal pan with foil and put them in naked (lol). I do a lot of toaster oven cooking and have decided temp can not be depended on, so I keep mine set to 'always on' and ''toast' so that my food is being cooked top and bottom at the same time! I just time and check and repeat if necessary. My pies did leak and melt, stuck to bottom just a little, but they were great and this was the 1st time I ever checked temp! Next time I'm gonna bake in the pan they come in to see what happens. It works great for everything else I cook.
@harrycallahan97337 жыл бұрын
I believe pot pies USED to go into the toaster oven, that was why they gave you an aluminum foil bowl instead of the current microwaveable paper/cardboard bowl. The reason now it is not a good idea to use toaster oven, is because toaster oven temperature fluctuate within a much bigger range than the normal oven. So when both set to 400F, the normal oven's temperature may go up and down 50F, but toaster oven could be plus and minus 100F (just to give an example, not actual real world numbers). The paper bowl might catch fire in a toaster oven. So if you can switch out the paper bowl with one of those disposable aluminum foil pans, it'll be the exact same setup as the old days, built for toaster oven.
@robertknight46722 ай бұрын
Also most of the early toaster ovens and you can still get models like this only had one rack position. Looks like the model here has at least two are rack positions. I have an air fryer toaster oven that has three rack positions and it has a digital control panel I know some people are not a fan of that but have not had an issue with it yet.

My guess is some of that instruction is this because in older toaster ovens with a single rack position you're very close to both heating elements. A toaster oven should be able to bake a pie just fine as many brands advertise at the toaster ovens could bake pies back when they came out.

It's also like the "don't use the popcorn mode" with microwave popcorn. There are so many varieties of toaster ovens and of microwaves that the food manufacturer can't be certain of how their product will turn out so they just tell you to not do it. As with the popcorn mode, the best thing to do is to give it a try and see if it works with your microwave (the Orville minibags seem to work on popcorn setting 1 for me) I do think the instructions on the packages are poorly written. I'm looking at a frozen chicken pot pie where the instructions say to keep it in it's paper tray with the microwave instructions but with the conventional instructions, it only says to remove the plastic wrapper. So does that mean you don't remove the plastic wrapper with the microwave... Does it mean you don't keep it in the paper tray if you use the conventional oven... The ignition point of paper is 451 Fahrenheit so a paper tray in an oven at 375 Fahrenheit might be reasonable so you can't just discount keeping the pie in the paper tray due to the risk of fire and without the paper tray, will it hold it's form... and since when did they abandon aluminum foil trays for paper trays... As to the microwave instructions not mentioning the wrapper, perforating cling film is common with microwave heating so just perforating the wrapper might be right and some products like microwave popcorn have special paint on their wrappers that heat up in the microwave to provide some crisping so why did they not mention the wrapper at all in the microwave instructions and why did they not mention the paper tray at all with the conventional oven instructions... I guess, this goes back to the just give it a try, you might loose one batch of chicken pot pies but then you'll know what will work for you but this does make me a bit upset at the food manufacturer... The 165 Fahrenheit recommendations is because various government groups and some legislations say that temperature would be safe, would it really be cooked at that temperature or palatable at that temperature, well that's not the concern of those organizations and the frozen pot pie fillings are often pre-cooked before being frozen and the crust might be par baked that is 80% baked before being frozen. Again, poorly written instructions...
