The sad part of plowing snow is foolish, dangerous drivers who do not yield the right of way. Many think because a truck has a snowplow they can stop better/faster than everyone else and they pull out in front of us folks trying our best to keep roads, parking lots etc clean. I wish our country would adapt a better method of teaching drivers how to drive safely and properly. Stay safe and keep up the great work. Ty.

Thanks for being honest about mistakes or mishaps on the job. Most people would be reluctant to show video footage of them being human and going off the road in tough conditions. It comes with the job and you lay it right out there. As always Jim, thanks for first rate videos and for letting us watch you work.

How many hour shifts do you work while plowing?
@JimHowDigsDirt
@JimHowDigsDirt Жыл бұрын
I am on call for 12 hours a day between 5 am to 5 pm, seven day a week for the 17 week winter works period. We alternate from day shift to night shift every two weeks, from the first of December until the end of March. Any plowing before or after that is usually handled by the full time year round employees. I only work the winters and am on a 17 week guarantee, which pays me 90 hour pay every two weeks whether I work or not. Being part time, I get paid 75% of our operator rate if I am not working and full rate when I am. If we happen to go over the 90 hours, we are paid for that too. That was a good question and thanks for asking!

My dad retired from PennDot literally a day before he died. He started off working for a drilling company driving their 100000 ppound rig from site to site back in the 80s but as we the kids got older he wanted to be home more then 2days every other weekend so he started working for the Township we lived in and eventually went to the state side of it. But in the winter time if it was gonna be a real bad storm and they call school off the night before id go with him and work the lever for the cinders when he told me to. We lived on the family farm at that point out in the country side of SwPa. Was always fun being the first person out on the roads during a snow storm. U guys are badasses to say the least. Nothing better then riding around with your pops plowing snow.. dont think penndot would of allowed me in the truck but the township was just a bunch of country men doing whatever they could to keep things going.

What I see is a good amount of excess salting. You could get the same amount of clear roads (Not instantly, of course) by salting on the return pass only (with an exception or two). With the way you're doing it, by salting on the first pass, you are scraping some salt into the ditch with your second pass. Exceptions: 1) If you are on a much higher side of the road, of course brine doesn't run up hill. 2) If you were on a four lane road, the approach would only be slightly different. I have 24 years of experience and my numbers have proven it works.

I think it's kinda nice you load your own salt. Sure, having someone else drive the wheel loader would make it "faster" but you don't have to worry about sitting around on your butt waiting for work to be done, if you wanna get filled with salt you get it done yourself!

We load our own trucks about 90% of the time. Sometimes if there's a spare operator kicking around they'll send him up to load trucks. That's not bad if you have a good operator on the loader.

Why the heck are you rowing gears in a plow truck? It should be mandatory that trucks spec'd for plowing should be Allison autos. We've got enough to concentrate on and do with our hands (steer, plow angle, spreader) that you shouldn't have to screw with a stickshift as well. Besides all that, it sure is nice pulling a long hill with snow built up in front of you for the truck to drop a gear on its own without you having to do it.

The hardest part for me was trying to understand that with the plow. I would not get it down to the black pavement on the first or second pass. Especially when I had to pass by the interstate. And see how the extra traffic helped the chemicals get spread around. I think that it would have been a lot better if. I went with someone else for a while just to ride. So I could have seen what it. Was like with snow. Instead of them showing me the route in the day time. In October in The sunshine.

Yes, some nights it hard to keep then clean. I always carry an extra set of wiper in the truck because you never know when they are going to fail under those conditions.

All our diesel trucks were jelling up during the freeze a couple weeks ago and they had to add an additive to stop the jelling. I had a rough night that night as I hit a median and knocked the plow lights off 🙄 First issue like that I have had in 5 years. Love plowing though and love the 9pm to 9am shift when it's quiet and everything is white .

@JimHowDigsDirt Жыл бұрын
Yeah John, ya gotta like the night shift when there's not much traffic on the roads! I know from experience if we try to run summer fuel in the winter it will jell up the filters. Maybe that's what was happening to your trucks?

@@JimHowDigsDirt they said it was winter fuel. It's odd because the school busses use the same pumps and didn't seem to have the issue. Fortunately I'm in one of around 50 pickup trucks and it had zero problems.... well, until I blasted the median and knocked the plow lights off. 🙄

I see the department renaming continues. The first time I worked for them, it was the DOT. The second tribe it was the Department of Transportation and Communications. Looking at the trucks in the video, I saw one that said "Transportation and Public Works" and another that says "Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal". Lol.

Yeah, you are right Ryan! Our older trucks have Transportation and Public Works on them and every truck they got since I've been here is TIR. I heard a rumour they were changing it again. I asked someone and they told me they thought it was just Nova Scotia Public Works now.

@JimHowDigsDirt
@JimHowDigsDirt Жыл бұрын
No, it just looks fast! I'd be doing around 50 kph or 30 mph on that section of road. We never go over 60 kph because if you are driving to fast a lot of your salt end up on the shoulder of the road and not where it's needed. Plus the plow scrapes the road better and is also a lot safer!

I remember growing up my dad , grandpa and uncle worked for the county here in Michigan. Wouldn't see any of them for days sometimes even a week or more. That was in the 60,70,80s we'd get a storm and they go. We all live with in a half mile so since I was the only boy I was expected to go shovel porches and feed the couple of cows my grandpa had . Them were the good old days.

Awesome videos and I thank you for taking them. I too know what you refer to about driver's who knowingly won't turn on headlights or remove as much snow as possible from their autos/trucks before they hit the roads. They endanger everyone by making their vehicle's hard to see in blinding snow storms. IN the US its a required by law that all vehicles turn on their lights when the sun sets yet many do not and our police do not have the time I believe to stop and tag them. I myself have plowed snow most of my life but in smaller full sized PU trucks yet I still with all my warning lights have fools pull out in front of me almost causing major accidents. I did a small test to see what would happen if my snow plow struck an auto at slow speeds of 5 MPH and it cut open the cars door like a can opener! Imagine the damage if I hit someone at greater speeds because they did not yield the right of way! I can easily adjust my driving, speed for all road conditions yet the wild card is always the idiots who shouldn't be allowed to drive a battery operated child's car let alone a real one when roads are dangerous, IMHO. Someday I plan on buying an older dump truck with the larger equipment to start plowing larger parking lots and sanding. Your video helped me see how it's done safely.Ty again.
