Jimi Hendrix answers question, who's the best guitarist!

I've heard many names thrown out about this. The most probable if it was said is Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Funny this show Billy was on didn't spell his name right. They left the S off the end. Here is really what Jimi said. A very humble answer! Of course the point of this video is to show that Jimi is not recorded anywhere saying who he thought was "the best". His humbleness shows when he says, "how about the best sitting in this chair". Which means whoever sat in it next could be the best. I shouldn't have to spell it out like this but so many responses here are so ignorantly missing the point!

The best guitarist isn't (or rather, need not be) Hendrix or Clapton or any other choice. The best guitarist is whatever guitarist moves you the most. Maybe that's Hendrix, maybe that's Segovia, maybe that's the Rev. Gary Davis, or maybe it's the kid next door. Making music is not like running a race; there is no objective measure of greatness. Whoever moves you the most, they're the best.

I think Jimi was one of the best because of his creativity with his blend of psychedelic, rock, and blues. And the fact that he made such creative music within 3 years? Jimi was very humble when he spoke about his playing. He often redirected comments from interviewers to other guitarists he enjoyed - especially young up and coming players that were not as well known whom he wanted to give kudos to including ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons and Terry Kath of Chicago Transit Authority. In his final interview just a day or two before he died in England Jimi also mentioned listening to the guitarists who played in Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys whom he heard on records growing up and had heard on radio broadcasts of live performances and or transcribed radio programs aired over time. For years I heard that Jimi had told Dick Cavett that young Youngstown, Ohio upstart guitarist Phil Keaggy of Glass Harp (Pro-rock trio signed to Decca) was the greatest guitarist in the world. Of course everryone now knows that is untrue. I asked Phil about it 22 years ago and he said he'd heard that story over the years and it had become somewhat of an urban legend which he competely discounted as being totally impossible and highly improbable that Jimi would have ever even heard of him. He said, "If Jimi had mentioned me, he probably said I was the shortest guitarist in the world," in referemce to his diminutive 5 foot 2 inch height. Others have claimed Clapton made the comment about Phil in Rolling Stone which is completely untrue. Stephen Stills and Ted Nugent both mentioned Phil in Guitar Player magazine interviews back in the 70's but their comments weren't anything like this urban legend linked to Jimi. There will never be another Jimi Hendrix!

The correct answer to the question, 'Who's the best guitarist' is 'Best at doing what?' I would say that the best guitarist at playing Layla is probably Clapton, the best at playing the end solo of Comfortably Numb is probably Gilmour, the best at playing Samba pa ti is almost certainly Carlos Santana. The list goes on and on, I'm sure you get my drift. If your criteria for 'best' is fastest, possibly Malmsteen, most technically accomplished, maybe Petrucci or Vai or Satriani. It depends how you are judging it. How can you make a valid comparison between John Williams, Paco de Lucia and Mark Tremonti, all brilliant in their own field of expertise, not one of them is better than the others.

The real answer is: nobody. Everyone brings something different to the table. There are many “greats” that anyone could list according to their tastes.
