Hi guys, to answer the question as to whether Jimi Hendrix wrote his own music: on the three studio albums he released with the Experience, the answer is absolutely yes he did, both lyrics and instrumentation, aside from a few well known covers (Hey Joe, and All Along the Watchtower). On the Band of Gypsys album, aside from Changes, which was a Buddy Miles song, he wrote I believe all the material as well including of course Machine Gun. To this day IMO his first album Are You Experienced is the greatest debut in the history of rock, and one of the greatest albums ever in any genre. He was an incredibly talented artist that the world sadly lost way too soon.

Agreed. Only I would take it a step further in the context of guitar playing. Jimi Hendrix invented modern electric guitar playing as we know it today. There was no one doing what he was doing in that time frame. He was also the first artist to own a commercial recording studio, Electric Ladyland Studios, still in operation in Manhattan, NYC. Too many musical acts and artists to count have recorded there and Jimi's creative spirit is alive and always present to many.

They once asked Miles Davis what the difference was between a great musician and a gad musician. Legend is Miles said “The difference between a bad musician and a good musician is, a good musician can play what he hears… The difference between a good musician and a great musician is what he hears.” Jimi heard things nobody else heard and came along when amps and wah wah pedals and overdrive pedals were just starting. He was influenced by the blues musicians from Chicago and Texas… but he brought it all to another level.

Well he went to the UK as a result of being spotted by Chas Chandler ex of The Animals who was getting into promotion amd management. He saw Jimi play and convinced him to go back with him to the UK where of course the UK music scene took to him. He was American of course but as far as us music loving Brits are concerned he should be an honorary Brit too and we feel proud the UK helped to launch his career! He certainly shook things up in London when he arrived and all the best of the best guitarists realised Jimi was way ahead of them.

His influences were old blues and who knows what. Keith Richards' girlfriend, Linda Keith, brought Chas Chandler (Bass player for The Animals) to the Cafe Wha? in the Village of NYC. He became Jimmy's manager and brought him to London in 1966. Hooked up with Noel Redding on Bass and John "Mitch" Mitchell on drums. Became The Jimi Hendrix Experience and hit it big. London press dubbed him the Black Elvis. Paul McCartney recommended him for The Monterey Festival. Of course there are many more historical details... history and legend. Great reactions

The first studio version is called "Voodoo Chile" Jimi was influenced by Blues players like Muddy Waters. I met the Bass player from the original recording Jack Casady he complimented me on my playing. I was using a tone very close to Jimi. That was in San Francisco in 1984. Jack Casady was the Bass player for The Jefferson Airplane.

People today have a hard time understanding why Jimi was so amazing. He was not technically proficient with the guitar, as so many are today. However, you have to transport yourself back to a time when the music world had never heard anything like what Jimi was doing back then. He was unique in that time, and every guitarist in the game was frantically trying to figure out how to keep up with his innovative and stylistic approach to the guitar. He propelled the guitar game to a higher level in a very short space of time, and rock music ever after has been completely different because of Jimi. This is why he is so admired and respected as a guitarist to this day.

Compare Jimi to Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Glen Tipton, Tony Iommi, etc. Then tell me Jimi was technically proficient. He knoew the fingerboard backwards and forwards, and could even play it upside down (high E on top), but he was not as technically proficient as most are today.

This is live. He built his own studio but hardly got to record there as it was barely finished by the time of his death. It still exists in NYC in Greewich Village. He played back-up to dozens of acts in the US including the Isley Bros, Little Richard, The Ronnettes, and others. Went on his own and was discovered by Chas Chandler, the bassist to the Animals, who brought him to the UK to start him off. His influences were the blues players and the british Blues-Rock players of the time who opened the door to Rocking high energy Blues. He was his own player though. He loved everything and absorbed music like a sponge. Loved classical jazz, folk pop. Everyone who ever met him said /says it - he was humble respectful and curious. A great artist with a great attitude. His inimitable sound comes from playing right handed guitars left handed along with his magical use of feedback and wah wah. and a couple of pedals.

Hi, do not fall for the "Jimi Hendrix Drug Thing"...he was a hard working dedicated man who created something that will forever inspire the universe. He was always touring, recording, creating, writing, practicing and jamming. While guitar players like Clapton, Beck, Page, Townsend and others were over in Europe listening to Black music from America on the radio and trying to figure out how to play it...Jimi was actually out there playing it while he was touring the Chitlin Circut in the South with Little Richard, The Isley Brothers, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Wilson Pickett, Ike and Tina Turner, B.B. King, Curtis Knight and so many more. Jimi was no mimic of the music...he was the real thing. He also used his experience as a paratrooper in the milatary in his music as well. All of those sounds of bombs, sirens, flares, missles and screehes you hear coming from his music is because he lived it and that is his EXPERIENCE...not drugs. Jimi loved playing music and there are no accounts of Jimi ever not showing up for a performance or concert. The circumstances surronding his death could have occured at the hands of others and there are valid reasons to beleive it did and not by Jimi taking an overdose. Yes he partied, got high, experimented with some things (but who did not during those times) but he was not a strung out junkie but instead an innovator as a result of commitment, dedication, hard work and an extremely intelligent man who had a vision that was beyond most before and after him!!!

Even to this day there is Jimi, then there's everyone else. To steal a phrase, today's guitarists play twice as fast and half as good. He was the first to really convey different emotions and ideas while creating this huge soundscape full of different dynamic tonal colors, textures and images, all full of meaning. A true original. Jimi was a painter and a visual artist as much as he was a guitarist. His version of "Wild Thing" (which I doubt KZbin will allow you to react to, even if you can find it) from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival is, if not his greatest live performance, certainly his most exciting and dynamic. To this day it is still shocking. Perhaps you could react to it without posting the video. I had the pleasure in seeing Jimi live 4 times before his death. What his studio performances don't capture is his personality. He was funny, incomprehensible, witty, forward thinking, spiritual, and just a bit shy. It was odd at the time to be one of few black people in the audience enjoying him. He was and remains truly amazing. We miss you Jimi.

There is a wonderful video/film of him performing voodoo Child with the experience “live in Maui 1970”. The audience is a large group of mostly white kids grooving along with the vibe in the style of the time don’t miss the girl on the floor at the four minute mark as she floats off into space Sadly this was one of his last performances because he died less than two months later but the wonderful quality of the sound and vision will keep him alive for decades to come

IMO what this man done for guitar players and music is the stuff of legends, unfortunately no one really thought much of him in the US until Chas Chandler ran into him in NYC and took him back to the UK, according to the history books the rest is history Not only a talent but setting the benchmark I could go on and on for hours about this guy lol I have played guitar for 30+ years and broken down many of his songs to learn there is nothing else like him, his lead was the first thing to melt my face but when I figured out some of his rhythm chops thats when I realized he was a flippin genius - in my world of course :-)

In the 50s and 60's a lot of African American artists performed in England, where they did not have the problems of rampant segregation and prejudice that was dominant back in the US at the time. They were a huge influence on many of the young rockers who formed the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin and others who were part of the so called "British invasion" of rock in the 60s.. but really they were bringing the music back home !

I read that he couldn't read music and the other two members of the Experience said he communicated what he wanted from them by colors, like " gimme more orange" or whatever. You raised a good question. Hendrix was influenced by early Rock and Roll artists, as all musicians of his generation were. And also all the classic Blues Artists, BB King, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Albert King, and Buddy Guy. He was a huge Bob Dylan and Beatles fan. He took song writing inspiration from Dylan, even though the musical styles were totally different.

Jimi never really had a chance to use electric lady land He died shortly after it opened up. He did some recording in it but not a lot. He was already producing himself early on ie: electric ladyland was all his producing. And yes he wrote his own music and lyrics.

He wrote his own stuff guys. There was the odd cover that he would do live - and very occasionally on record - but most of Jimi's material was his own.
