I was at this show, and I think eveyone's jaw just hit the floor when Jimi played this. Consider that this is just about 50 years ago, and to this day nobody can touch the genius that was Jimi Hendrix. Note the delay between the end of the song and when people start clapping - we were all just stunned.

It's great that you mentioned this, because when I first heard this recording back in 1973, I pointed out to a friend that the audience didn't applaud right away at the end. So my friend comes back with "Are you saying they didn't like it?' And I said "No, I think they were all shell shocked for a moment." Minds totally blown. This is a very intense performance.

that's exactly what I wanted to say.......... for folks who weren't around at the time (1969) it's great to see that there always will be some people willing to listen to something completely different from everything else. I don't really know just how Jimi Hendrix did this but it is one of the greatest artistic statements ever made by one of the true innovators in music as an art. I have been listening to this song on and off for about fifty years and am still overwhelmed by what I hear. No kind of studio effects or technology, just bare bones artistic expression. And to Asia and BJ....... it was quite apparent that you were actually moved by what you heard. I loved your reactions.

I saw your episode on Eddie Van Halen & although he was brilliant & certainly had genius about him, you have to understand, Jimi did this within a three year period changing almost completely the language of the electric guitar, while also writing innovative & classic songs. Nothing against Van Halen , he surely innovated, but with Jimi , the musical well was just a tad or 2 deeper.

Easily one of the greatest performances in rock history. Not only does Jimi play a phenomenal guitar solo incorporating rock, blues, and jazz, but he also recreates the sounds of war with machine guns, planes dive bombing, explosions, and screams of terror. A true masterpiece performed during the Vietnam war timeframe. Sadly he died about 10 months later.

And you also realize its only the second song in the set, and also did 2 shows the day before and did one more this same day. What energy. The songs for groovy children compilation from the Filmore east shows are a testament to his live abilities. You're literally hearing what no other human is capable of. The Inglewood Forum tapes probably have one of the crazier versions of machine gun but the audio is so bad. Props to those amateur recording dudes that brought their home rigs to these concerts cuz that is all we have for evidence of what this guy could do.

GREATEST PERFORMANCE IN HISTORY. Yes, I yelled it. That high he hit is impossible. I have never listened to a song that made me visualize an event like this. The helicopters, the machine-gun fire, the people yelling for help. I heard it all without a word. Only one man can do that; Jimi. Talk to them, Jimi!! Let them know.

I had the great fortune to see Jimi perform this at the Fillmore East. I was not at this performance, but rather at the first show on New Years Eve. Me and my buddy sat in the 4th row on the left side of the stage. Truly memorable. I saw Jimi a total of 4 times before he died, the last time at Randall's Island here in NYC. RIP Jimi, we miss you forever.

I read a story once about the live performance from which this song was taken...Hendrix was to play two shows to be recorded for a live album. In the first show, he performed as he always did, playing the guitar behind his back and with his teeth, banging the guitar against his amplifiers, windmills, back bends, all the legendary stage moves he was known for. Afterwards, he asked Bill Graham, who was the concert promoter, how he had done. Graham replied tersely: "It was fine." Jimi was taken aback by the lackluster response and asked Bill what was wrong. Graham reminded Hendrix he was being recorded, and said he felt all the stage antics were hurting the overall sound. When Hendrix returned for the second show, he stood stock still in one spot, and delivered an incredible performance, sonically. He left the stage near the end, and found an elated Bill Graham, and asked him: "How was that, motherfucker!" Then he returned for an encore, which was fifteen minutes of non-stop bump and grinds and twirls and leaps and movement and every trick he could think of.

An apocryphal story. All four shows (not 2) were recorded, filmed, and lots of photos taken there's no pictures or film of him doing any of that. The more likely reason is the band was under rehearsed, a handful of rehearsals over a 2 week period, and hendrix wrote a new songs that were more or less in an embryonic state as well.

SRV is a great guitarist, but sometimes I feel like he's trying to follow the blueprint Jimi laid down. Jimi didn't have a blueprint, everything he played was a pure expression of his feelings and emotions. The way he was able to channel through the guitar will never be experienced again. Mike Bloomfield admitted he had no idea how Hendrix was doing what he was doing. He guessed that extreme volume had something to do with it. After seeing Hendrix he was devastated and didn't pick up a guitar for about a year. '''He knew who I was and burned me to death.''

It's also one more of the Fillmore East's all time greatest performances, akin to the Allman Brothers Band, Humble Pie and others. Buddy Miles is one of the all time best power drummers. The greatest musical performance I've ever heard, by the single most important musician in rock history. Listening to Hendrix is like listening to Parker or Coltrane. It's on a whole other level. Pure genius. That solo is unmatched by anyone else I've ever heard. Over 50 years since his death, no musician has got anywhere near him. Plenty have copied him, but nobody can touch him. Imagine being in the audience and witnessing that!

I'm a 63 year old white guy, but I had this album in the 70s, and nobody past or present comes close to Jimi as a guitarist. Keep in mind that they didn't have all the electronic add-ons to augment the guitar sounds when Jimi was doing it. HE was the reason they invented the wa-wa pedal and the talk box for guitar, so other guitarists could try to sound like him.

This song has been used in so many tv movies, movies in Theatre, and on and on. Hendrix' sound is unmistakable. You just know that is Jimi playing from the moment you hear that guitar. Guys like him come around once in a lifetime. Unfortunately, Jimi died at age 27. He was just getting started with his career. Think of all the great music he would have created. At least he left us with some of his genius to enjoy. Thanks guys

I got goosebumps watching you get goosebumps. When Jimi was on it there was nobody to touch him just by the sheer emotion he wrings out of his audience, himself and his guitar. This was Jimi's Band Of Gyosys group. It's Jimi with Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on drums. An all black group that combined funk with rock and basically created the funk/rock genre. Another great song from that album is POWER TO LOVE (Also called Power Of Soul).

the isle of wright version is very close, maybe my favorit. He's so tired so...and then he plays like never before. But that is a phrase you can't use with jimi, because when he opens up, it's all new again. It's haunting in a different way, like he knows his time is almost up

This tune blew Miles Davis away after John Mclaughlin introduced him to Jimmies music, he was'nt limited to just Rock & Blues, Jimi jammed with both John & Miles and many other Jazz Greats. An extraordinary & unequaled sound painting. Awesome! Billy Cox stated that Jimi, Miles and him were paying Homage to Charley Patton & Son House when they played this tune. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just came across this and I have to give much cred for reacting to this. Jimi Hendrix was introduced to me by my older brother (RIP). This was the first song I heard as a 11 year old boy. I've been hooked ever since. He is the Picasso of electric guitar. He was light years ahead of his time. He brought blues to the highest reaches that could be had. I'm 53 now and still wish that he was alive. Who knows what he would've done? There is no one like him and there will never be

Listening to Jimi is like running a marathon. At first its exhilarating, but then it becomes a little overwhelming. However, if you stick with it you eventually get that blissful runner's high. You have to commit to listening to Jimi to really appreciate it.

Howdy from Texas! THIS is the song that launched a million guitar careers! Stevie Ray Vaughan and others. Widely considered to be the most magnificent electric guitar ever played. I remember hearing this when it first came out and it definitely had a huge effect on me because I was a veteran during the Vietnam War.

Had this album (and 8 track) when it came out, and there are no words to explain this song - I love Pink Floyd and David Gilmour, but Jimi's playing on Machine Gun is THE absolute most incredible guitar ever recorded. And the rest of this album is pretty sweet, too. Hard to believe this was over 50 years ago, with 'limited' technology, Hendrix fully utilized the phase shifter and wah wah pedal. For a super trippy headphone experience, listen to "1983" (that was the 'future" back then) off of the Electric Ladyland album, it's a 13 minute sonic trip.

This song is a great example of how experimental an artist like Jimi could be onstage, and not have worry about playing "hits" all night, even though he had his share of those. Unfortunately, these days are gone, and probably won't come back.

Love how he starts the solo with that incredible screaming sustained high note. Any other guitarist would have slowly build to that note over the length of the whole solo. But for Jimi, that note was just blast off point.

I was heavy into Jimi Hendrix in my early twenties. I am sixty now. I had all of his albums. Machine Gun was my favorite composition by him. I have heard all the versions.
