I was fortunate enough to be going to SF State when the Doors came to the Fillmore. Late 60s. What a show. The organ notes seem to float on the SF fog or the smoke from a lit joint as we approached the auditorium and the mic stand seemed to be all that kept Jim upright. Still a fabulous show. One that I remember well and I am now 77.

Both my parents left the East and met each other on the West coast in 66. They heard things were "happening" out there. The music, the parties, the cars, the political atmosphere. Same for me in the 80's. We had to find the "party" or the "concert" or the roller staking rink or the fire in the woods where everyone was drinking. Long trips out the lake in the summer were amazing. Today, my children have instant social communication on demand. They have in-home entertainment. They have everything at their fingertips except the real tangible feeling of discovering people face to face. It's sad that today we know everything, but have experienced nothing.

Even with this vast amount of information at our fingertips there's nothing like actually getting out there on your own. I am from central Florida actually much like Mr Morrison and just recently moved out to Colorado on my own after exploring much of our country by car for weeks before. And you're absolutely correct actually being face to face with it is so much different. And things are happening. Anyways I don't know I'm ranting at you peace

At the time i thought they were a new band, cause they didnt sound like anyone, and of course, Morrison looked modern at the time - at least on that cover from 1982. Immedeately I discovered that this was music beoynd time and geography. And it became the soundtrack for me and some other young rebels on the other side of the Atlantic :) And though I loved - and love - everything Doors did, this one along with some others is my favourite. (the obvious ones are the best, boring as it may be - the end, when the musics over, break on through, though some may differ to make them selves alternative). For me, Riders on the Storm is the best rock-track ever, number one over Beatles A day in the Life.

Have to agree on many aspects of what you said. They transcend time and music, i grew up with it thanks to my mum. She was young during the 70s and i was named after two Beatles, i am Paul George, but for some reason she did not pull the beatles LP out nearly as much as she did the Doors. I was probably the only 4 or 5 year old obssessed with this music i ever met. Guess it happens when u have young folks. This music will be relevant in another 50 years

I am dating myself but Jim was a Navy Brat like me , I just barely missed crossing paths with him but my father a Naval Captain (CEPAC) worked with his Dad (Admiral Morrison) during the Vietnam War re. lengthening and upgrading runways. I remember seeing my Dad and Adm. Morrison together working over a map table , the Adm. had some rolled up maps under his arm , he looked at me and my Dad identified me “ Oh this is my ride home , my son Ron “ we exchanged greetings. I knew prior to this who this Adm. was and on the way home I asked my dad “ Do you know who that guy is ?!” (Jim Morrison’s Dad) and my dad says “Oh yeah ! that’s Admiral Morrison a highly respected Naval Aviator and in command of a carrier task force” I said “ No Dad his son is in the band called The Doors “ went right over his head . A couple months later he said to me “ I don’t want you hanging out with that Morrison kid “ LOL
@kelvinkloud5 жыл бұрын
Cool story... Morrison’s dad seemed to be an honorable and impressive indiv... it’s sad how he and Jim were mainly estranged the last 5 years of jims life. Quite a generation gap during that era imo had a lot to do with it.... what was your dads take later after Jim died?... did adm Morrison ever talk to him about Jim?
@oceanhome20235 жыл бұрын
Admiral Morrison was the most outgoing talented and verbose Admiral that I met . He was not content just doing his duty and he would jump into other fields like helping my Dad on an island run way expansion during the Nam War using crushed coral as the bedding. As a former aviator he was always finding ways to help the pilots make it to safety. The admiral had 2 other “Brats” a daughter and a son he retired in San Diego on Balboa island with other aviators in their little community. My Dad never followed the Doors like me. He had heard the scuttlebut about Jim’s behavior in Naval housing.This is why he told me not to hang out with him. Dad was worried about me using drugs but it was too late I already was dropping acid . Loved to be high when I would play Doors Records I also had his 8track cassettes in my car . Jim was not disowned by his Dad his dad just figured he would come around eventually. The Admiral and his wife visited Jim’s grave in Paris and it was photographed . I have seen an interview with the Admiral at his home with his daughter talking about Jim’s life . I saw it on Utube but I cannot remember where it was .

@@oceanhome2023 ... thanks for your take & insights. Your memories parallel a lot of the positive comments that have been made about his father in re to those who knew, worked w/ & commented on him. Its obvious he was a smart & talented man, one doesnt rise that quickly to his station in life w/o an impressive skill set. It also seems he was concerned greatly about the welfare of the soldier under him. Jim's natural instincts for charisma, tenacity, big picture perspective & dealing w/ all types of walks of life it seems were influenced to one degree or another, both genes & relationship via his father... Their gulf is focused on in the common rebellion narrative tied to the jim morrison legend, but under closer research it seems more gray & less acrimonious then commonly known. actually, it seems to be more of a high profile strain wh/ many boomers & ww2 gen parents were having during that difficult cultural period. I honestly dont think there has been a wider generation gap between parents & kids then during the 60's-mid 70's. there was simply major cultural changes happening pitted inbetween a very controversial war. there was also a level of affluence & freedom open to many boomers that their parents didnt have. jim in many ways was a microcosm of that... it should be kept in mind though, his dad supported & financed jim's intellectual pursuits thru college. if jim never got to ucla, the doors wouldve never happened. he also gave jim the latitude to figure it all out & pursue his dreams even if he didnt agree w/ it. & most people dont know, but they were in contact during the miami trial in wh/ his father actually stepped up for his son in direct written testimony in support of his son... as you state, the parents did indeed later go to his grave & he also penned the moving and fitting ephitat on jims grave. I too have seen the footage near the end of his life talking about his son, & its clear he sadly missed & cared for him.... those were crazy times though & jim as his dad stated, chose like many pilots he knew during ww2, to fly hard at the sun. his was true to his spirit & that bravery was partly dna passed from his dad imo.

kelvinkloud We are blessed to share that Cultural touchstone. Re him and his father the fruit did not fall far from the tree . They both had magic eyes and lofty thinking he was trained a good combat pilot but showed an amazing grasp of civil engineering talking about how the runway aprons should not face into the sun and blinding pilots . My Dad and him volunteering together after B52s were kicked out of the Philippines so Guam runways had to be made capable for the B52s to launch their raids on Vietnam. When my Brat friends came home from Nam they still had their 8 tracks of the Doors that we listened to Jim “There will never be a one like you “

I dare say Jim was the probably the best American poet of the last 50 years. For those who like to read go ahead and read his biography "no one gets out of here alive". The life and talent this man had! Craziest story of all is that he was really shy, he didn't like facing the crowd for their first gigs at Whisky a GoGo, Sunset Boulevard, LA (does not exist any more). So for the first gigs he sang with his back to the crowd, making the Whiskey manager go crazy. When he started singing facing the crowd the girls went wild and the rest is history. I wish he was alive!!! He would have a lot to say nowadays. Was lucky enough to see Manzarek and Krieger live in 2004 with lead by Ian Astbury of The Cult.

He needs that leather jacket in the desert, because he's so damn cool.

So much coolness in one place it's almost overwhelming. The tune, the car, the wide open spaces, the old gas stations and open roads, the Doors and the one and only Jim "cool as fuck" Morrison. Respect to everything in this video, its so seemingly casual but so subtlety powerful, really great piece of filmmaking complements everything beautifully. Perfection.

Riders on the storm Riders on the storm Into this house we're born Into this world we're thrown Like a dog without a bone An actor out alone Riders on the storm There's a killer on the road His brain is squirmin' like a toad Take a long holiday Let your children play If you give this man a ride Sweet memory will die Killer on the road, yeah Girl ya gotta love your man Girl ya gotta love your man Take him by the hand Make him understand The world on you depends Our life will never end Gotta love your man, yeah Wow! Riders on the storm Riders on the storm Into this house we're born Into this world we're thrown Like a dog without a bone An actor out alone Riders on the storm Riders on the storm Riders on the storm Riders on the storm Riders on the storm Riders on the storm

Love your name! I'm 45 but I look 35! Anyhow I rem alot of the old cars in early 80s that were left from this period. Living was the same. You were free! In 91 I would get ciggs at gastation then they would give me matches. I would light right up then. I'm from Boston! But I rem the 60s cars still being around. Last of old school. But I'm tall got thick hair and i look like 34

The "Coolness" factor of Jim Morrison was unmatched by anyone else except maybe Elvis Presley or James Dean. These kind of personalities are rare.

@Gary Davis I like the song and he was definitely good looking, but the dead dog part in the video is sad. I was born in '59, lived in Eagle Mt. CA until I was 3yrs. old. My folks weren't hippies though. Drugs did kill Jim, right? Too bad, he was definitely talented. On a different topic though. The video looks like he is driving in that area of the Mojave Desert. I remember that road. Does anyone one know where that gas station Jim stops at in the video was? Desert Center perhaps?

Jim was such a handsome man. Had I seen him on the street in passing- I would be looking over my shoulder for a second look- and that's the god's honest truth! A very talented and legendary musician and his music will live on.
