What a fantastic “old school” workshop! Hardwood floors, high ceilings, space, and genuine antique machinery!

This solution is AWESOME!! I ordered some to use on a Colonial Rifle kit and it arrived last Wednesday. Today I had a chance to use it on one of my older rifles that needed a little attention. Polished up the buttplate and trigger guard, applied the finish and WOW!! Instant beautiful dark finish. The video doesn't do the quality of the finish justice! No more plum brown for me!!

Nice! I used to use Plum Brown with all of the heating required. I'm going to try this. Looks great and no propane issues.

Jim, some of the preliminary material removal can be sped up with a Dremel with sanding drum bit. I never would have believed it, but with practice, it works great.

While working there, did you hear Morgan Freeman's voice saying " Oh Andy..." Seriously though, Thanks for sharing your techniques on finishing metal. So many folks will not share their wealth of experience as you do...thanks again! Can't wait for your next kit offering!

Really cool discovery made years ago when the ..acid or plum brown chemicals react to the steel wool and the barrel surface...you can feel heat and really get a different lighter brown brown more natural finish than with the propane

What is this solution? It looks like a cold blue of some sort. I really do like the dark look though

Jim, What make, size and cut is that half round file you are using? It looks very handy for finish filing the hardware. Thanks for all the information and help.
@deeparks3112
@deeparks3112 5 жыл бұрын
Grobet brand files. 6" long, the half-rounds come in different cuts from 00 to 4, rough to fine cut. Looks like Jim was using about a #2 cut. I use 1,2,3, & 4's for locks and brass. After a #4 you can skip the 220 sandpaper.

Jim, Does the patina solution give the part any resistance to rust?
@kiblerjim
@kiblerjim 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, some resistance. I don't mind if it gets some rust. Just wipe with oil and it adds to the appearance

@@ronalddavis actually I believe its a brass antiquing solution. Also Mike Miller uses cold blue on his locks then puts it to a wire wheel to simulate case hardening. Hershal House boiles his parts in bleach ....all high end builders with low tech techniques,
