I thought that was a beautiful a story and the kids are obviously open-minded. Glad that mother turned out to be a very loving mother as well. I think this kinda thing happened to me when i was a lifeguard, but he wasn't ready and i wasnt in the mood to just wait. Plus keeping a beard girlfriend who ended up liking me and telling him that she wanted a real relationship, and didnt realize i was his bf that summer, she dumped him for me but i of course said no as being gay isnt a choice or a sin as she started to say to get guilt from me and luckily she married, but i havent had a talk with him in 15 yrs so i moved on. Unfortunately he ruined it and i know everyone was on his side, but had he realized it sooner, we would likely have stayed together. Sometimes fairy tales are just that, fairy tales. Cant change someone who wont change themselves until its too late.

How long is too long? Never... I am now 73 in my lifetime one of my biggest regrets was letting guys at various stages of my life slip away. I can say with certainty I think of each one of them nearly daily. A few have passed over the years... others are still here. I have tried to contact them having success searching for them but alas not getting a return response from any of them. I am now at that stage of life waxing stoically. I arrived alone and shall depart this world the same. The only advice I can give to anyone is to follow your heart no matter what your secondary thoughts may be, act on them with all your might. The gut intution seems to be the only reliable one only you have your life to live no matter what others say.
