This is a tribute that I put together for BBC TV during the British Open at Royal Birkdale in 2008. I wrote a book that featured a chapter on Bruen called Legends in their Spare Time in 2007 and interviewed Christy O'Connor and John Jacobs, who knew Jimmy well. Their voices are here. Jimmy was Ireland's first golfing superstar. The Rory McIlroy of his day. In addition to the priceless archive footage, there's also a lovely tribute from Jose Maria Olazabal who had a lot in common with Jimmy.

Great piece, watch it often. Is there any way to know Bruen's height and club specs? Were his clubs longer and more upright, how did he get clubs built and who did it? I have many questions about him, but it is really had to find information on him

It was and still is an excellent piece on Master Bruen. And the chapter on him in your book is also excellent 👏👏

May I discuss Jimmy Bruen's amazing swing on my channel? I'd love to compare him to Jim Furyk and Matthew Wolff.

Lovely. Henry Cotton, as knowledgeable a person about golf as has ever lived, said that in the 3 or so years before the second world war Jimmy was the best golfer in the WORLD - amateur or professional.

Very interesting to see this. My late mother knew him and she talked about him. I believe he lived next her , when she lived at Ferney , BlackRock in Cork. She was Isobel England then .

Great to see that the unique swing of this great player was captured. Unorthodox, yes, but a lovely fluid motion. If you presented it to the Golf Channel and Sky analysts, they would have a field day showing you why he couldn't possibly break 100! Now I'm off to study Moe Norman.

Jimmy Bruen had a unique connection with Royal Birkdale, as you'll see in this video. The Irish connection with the wonderful Lancashire course was further enhanced with Padraig Harrington's memorable defence of his Open Championship title there in 2008.

A very modern swing style in many ways similar to Johnny Ruiz. Lots of what Martin Ayres and George Gankas teach now in there. Wonderful downswing, pure rotation. Would love to hear the sound.

I love hearing announcers of a bygone era trying to explain what is now called "The Juju Swing" after it's main proponent's daughter. She is hitting 280 consistently at 14 years old with this swing.

May be one of the first.."push/slap" golf swings. Upper left arm rises (scapula rises) for BS and upper left arm drops down on DS. Not shoulders turning around, but a Up then Down(use of gravity and loosest joint in the body... scapula).

keeping the right arm extended and not leaning over too much makes for a wider ark=more energy/speed. The closest I have found is Richard Burton who had a very upright/high arm swing style. I have been doing drills and exercises on this kind of swing and it is progressing EXTREMELY WELL!!!!!!!=although I am 72 I expect to be able to be competitive in various amateur/professional competitions as my eyes are still good and I never had any problem with chipping/putting.--God Willing!!!!!!!
