In rehearsal with a guitarist friend, I was introduced to Jimmy Bruno. I'd felt I had known you, Jimmy, for at least the past 30 years! Not only is your music and approach so damn tasteful, but you've got a real human way with everything. I'm not sure how I missed you, but it's never too late. For all of you out there, Jimmy is THE MAN.

Jimmy, you just made me realize something at 3:00. I dig movement. Music gets more interesting when there's a sense of movement. Heck, even drums! When you add grace notes or let your stick bounce to a stop on the snare, it's movement. Thank you for teaching us all about feeling. It's a big part of what music is about.

Thanks Mr. Bruno. I studied with Ed Flanagan, Joe Federico and Dennis Sandole a hundred years ago. It is great to hear you put into simple terms concepts that can so easily fill the student's mind with confusion. I studied jazz with those teachers for seven years, but then came the siren call of flamenco music and I strayed from that training ground, but all those years of theory, ear training, improvisation have helped me immensely to crack the codes of another kind of difficult music. Also, my ability to take a phrase and expand it has also slowed my progress in gaining the fundamentals of flamenco; it was too easy for me to take a line and twist it into something else, so I had to really discipline myself to keep it simple and learn from the bottom up again. Thanks for sharing your lifetime of experience.

Seems. all the players from Philly went to Dennis Sandole . I know three of them and they all play in a similar fashion- well. He wrote a book but he passed before I ever would have had a chance to learn From him. 14:28

Most Piano players step on guitar players area - but piano players would argue that guitar players step on piano players too. The way to solve this is each player needs to listen to the other player and be happy playing less, because it’s redundant to put out the same density of notes all at once, all the time. We need to be happy with a minimal addition to the overall combined sound. Jim Hall and Bill Evans made two great records demonstrating the power of less, being more. The two Hall/Evans record titles are: Intermodulation and Undercurrent.

From starting to really learn both, Jazz Guitar, as in the way jazz guitarists like Jimmy Bruno play, is like slightly simplified classical guitar. They both merge chord voicings and arpeggios and melodic lines into the playing, instead of just doing a chord progression.

Great Sery Jimmy. I am a very old friend of Jack Wilkins and learnt a lot from him in the end of the 90's. He came to Montreal 3 times for a week to help me with my playing and I went half a dozen times to his place in NYC.I offered him 2 instruments, the Tal Farlow he is still playing with and a very nice old L7C. I just realized it was almost 20 years ago and I do not believe he would recognize my playing though... I like your playing and I think this very of yours is great . JP

I must say I've only just literally a couple days back rediscovered Jimmy Bruno (I first discovered and regularly enjoyed listening to him back in the early 90s). Now the rediscovery is more likely to become a religion, as long as Mr Bruno keeps uploading these treasure chest! A new but equally fascinating addition to his music is his verbal discourse and musical-social practical concepts. THANKS, Jimmy!!

My question (if you would be so kind) is that I have been stuck a certain level and progressing slowly toward jazz. I can play some swing type jazzy blues and just kind of know where the 7ths and 3rds are from playing it forever and learning how it sounds but I can't mentally get to the next step. So: When you first started learning, how did you first solve the puzzle of creating jazz? What were you thinking of while playing? Is it all about guide tones and connecting them? or connecting arpeggios? was it learning Roman numeral patterns II/V/I 6/2/5/1 etc? or was it internalizing lines and language learned from records that just comes out by ear? Thanks for any help!

At 77 I feel like I'm just beginning. I didn't know practice makes perfect until just a few years ago. Rich Severson, my neighbor, has been a great help with guitar camps and guitar college. I understand theory on a certain level but when they start stacking chords on top of each other and naming them, I'm lost. A question I'm sure you get all the time: what's a method for getting to know where all the notes on the fingeroard are at a glance? . . . Love your videos. . .Carl

It's great to learn that way, and its to bad you haven't found pianist who plays enough music to know a little about guitar layout or tenor overtones. I'm interested in playing music behind you. As a young pianist I observed Jimi , 67 in Troy, NY. and also jammed with John a few times at Fenway dorms, where we got reprimanded For playing after hours. Have recorded and done Tours with Rydell . I think a short piano guitar interlude as an intro to your show would add greatly. I greatly enjoy your approach to learning Music.
