I have mastered this from an original 1st pressing vinyl LP from 1960 to get the best sound possible.I know this has been mastered on CD which is good because the LPs are hard to find in nice condition.But in listening to the CDs I can't help but think the sound quality is just not as good as it should be.Like they sucked all the life out them! I am hoping this is better.
This Lp was issued in 1960 but the songs are all the older singles that Jimmy Bryant did in 1952 -56.He and Speedy West took the country jazz? instrumentals to a Stratospheric level (pun intended) in 1950s.It still holds up well 60 years down the road.Two greats at there best.
Can I just say before you ask.There are no sped-up tapes on the guitars. Jimmy's just lightening fast and amazingly accurate.
Songs
00:00 Frettin' Fingers
02:01 The Night Riders
04:24 Deep Water
07:24 Jammin' with Jimmy
09:52 Whistle Stop
12:08 Stratosphere Boogie
14:19 Pickin' Peppers
16:30 Pushing the Blues
19:40 Rolling Sky
22:05 Yodeling Guitar
24:14 Bryant's Bounce
26:36 Hometown Polka
Jimmy Bryant-Guitar & Fiddle
Speedy West-Pedal Steel
Billy Strange -Rhythm Guitar
Billy Liebert-Piano
Cliffie Stone-Bass
Roy Harte-Drums
That is the listed musicians on the cover,basically Cliffie Stones Hometown Jamboree band and all Capitol Records studio players. It is likely to also have the following on some of these songs.I don't have session notes (just my guess).
Les Taylor or Merrill Moore -piano
Al Williams-Bass
Muddy Berry-drums

Unbelievable, awesome, amazing, fantastic, incredible. What else can you say about Jimmy Bryant and Speedy West? Those two guys were without doubt two of the greatest musicians in any genre, in any time period---- whether it's jazz, country, pop, or anything else you can name. There's a lot of famous musicians making millions playing guitar today who are total amateurs compared to these guys. I don't know how they developed their fantastic chops, but they were just two geniuses with God-given talents.

Practice and dedication do not come from an invisible sky wizard.When people say god given-they belittle human ingenuity and perseverance .It’s far more important what kind of person someone is than what their music sounds like-that’s what the sky wizard would be interested in-one’s moral character,not how fast they can play Billie’s Bounce or Confirmation

Hey Chris, I hear these tunes on Pandora radio through the same sound system as what I use on KZbin and you have absolutely beat them with your re-mastered result. BTW, I had the pleasure of jamming with Speedy & Jimmy in 1961 in Bakersfield California. They were very down to earth considering their popularity at the time. Super pickers, a joy to play bass with them. Thank you so much for sharing their art.

At the Teenage Fair at the Hollywood Paladium circa 1965 I was at a guys booth who was selling small electric guitars. A middle aged or younger fellow came up and started playing one. Someone told me that it was Jimmy Bryant whom I had heard of but had to images of. I think after that experience I bought an album of his.

First of all thanks for posting, I hadn't heard most of these before and even the others not sounding as good as this, JB never fails to drop my jaw. One for the guitar nuts out there, like me - can anyone confirm what I'm guessing, that he habitually used both pickups on? The neck pickups on these early teles were wired to be pretty muffly but his sound is always quite clear & bright and its not the bridge pup I feel. Thanks again.

Very nicely transcribed. Sadly, many of the Capitol CD reissues of amazing sounding LP's simply stink. The Nat King Cole/George Shearing collaboration is a stellar LP and the CD pales in comparison. Some of Les Paul's CD's are awful compared to real LP's. Thanks for posting.

I think what you are hearing is the natural (room reverb) that is on most all Capitol original recordings.You don't hear this on the CDs because they are so filtered with noise reduction that you lose all that natural reverb sound.This has been one of my gripes for years.The CDs sound very dry and most of the dynamics also suffer badly with there noise reductions.I don't think Capitol added any reverb to the LP that wasn't on the original master tapes.When I do my transfer I use hardly any noise reduction and never add any reverb.....Chris
@JoeGarchar1960
@JoeGarchar1960 7 жыл бұрын
Those would have been some very live rooms, this is only speculation, but It could also be mic placement within the rooms that gave those early Capitol albums that natural live sound, non-direct mic technique will pick up more ambient room sounds than direct mic placement, like placing a mic in the center of the room or above the sound source, giving the effect of reverb, or deflected sound from a large piece of glass and placing the mic 3-6 feet away from the glass, that will give the same effect without using a reverb plate. I'm not sure what amps had reverb on them in the early to mid 50's when these were actually recorded and also they would not use any reverb in the mastering process, that would take away depth from the recording process, so that would have been done in the final mixing stages. I think you are correct about the natural room reverb, plus I would think most of these songs were done in one or two takes with little or no dubbing involved and so they have that live feel on record, very simple production that works. It would be interesting to research to find out just how they achieved that sound, it's a great sounding LP, thanks for the upload.

Les Paul built chambers at Capitol that they used on lots of their stuff. Whatever ever it was, the Capitol reverb was the greatest.
