I love this recording. My best friends dad served in Vietnam. A lot of his friends died in a platoon. Craig and I were best friends since first grade until adulthood. When his father came back, the only thing he would do is sit on the front porch and drink. So Craig sorta told me, Randall they broke my dad. We lost touch and moved on but this was Craig's favorite song.

All wars are banker wars. They use our patriotism against us when we're too young to see thru it. They get rich and we get wounded..............if we're lucky.

Beautiful. Now that I’m 71 and my husband is 80 this song has special poignancy.

Not the biggest Buffett fan (forgive me), but this song and his humility have always touched me. It's just not the same without him on this world. Jimmy definitely went out SWINGING!

@@tomcox22 Thank you for your graciousness. I was just never a fan of the parrot-head era, but this song symbolizes the real Jimmy Buffett to me.

Thank you for posting this. It's a magical song, and hearing Buffett sing it before he was a superstar and you couldn't hear him sing above the Parrot-heads was a real treat.

Again, many thanks for putting this up. I have read Jimmy's autobiographies and it is clear that in his very early days, along with his friend Jerry Jeff, these two, amongst doubtless many others, performed more along the lines of folk singers (though clearly their music was not "folk"), just Jimmy, himself and a guitar in bars, universities and similar venues. Yes,in those days, just Jimmy, his personal style and voice. There are several options as to how his progression can be viewed. Certainly, his business focussed drive to succeed commercially , lead to the larger and great concert sound with various iterations of the Coral Reefer Band. However, it needs to be understood that Jimmy's major income stream has never come from record (& much later) cd sales. His major source of income was generated by the hugely successful American summer tours, frequently playing to large open air crowds such as Wrigley and other similar venues. By this time, his shows were large ParrotHead events, however he always maintained top class music quality. Naturally, the smaller venue ambience, as with this great performance obviously could not be retained. But then so many more fans were able to see him live. For me, much of the great appeal of this track comes from hearing a much younger Jimmy's voice at a time when, just he and a guitar sounded excellent. It would be naive to basically want to put him in a time bottle and not expect him to develop into the bigger, broader CRB performing style which became his, and just about every other successful artists' performing style. Nevertheless it is great to hear him in his early performing years, here, with really just Jimmy, his guitar and personality. Magic.

Very well articulated summarization! He's lived life in his terms. Must have been one interesting ride!

@@goaskmymom1350 I was privileged to see him live at a small club at Myrtle Beach the summer of 1974 or 75. Sat on sidewalk the whole afternoon so we'd be first to go in. Sat not ten feet away from him. I had no idea he would evolve as he did. But it's not all for show; it's who he was. He was already full of zest and enjoying life. The next few years as an Army spouse, I turned everyone U knew into ParrotHeads. I would have loved to see him at a later show when performing for hundreds of thousands. Any way, anywhere, any time - I would have loved to see him. Just way out of my price range. He did good deeds for the planet so I'm okay with it. If he had to go, which all of us will, I'm glad he had his wife, family, friends, his music, and his dogs with him. He will be missed.
