Great video. James Harden is a good offensive player but he depends his scoring too much on drawing fouls and step back jumpers whether it'd be 3's or mid range. Versus arguably the best perimeter defender right now, the step backs won't work so well and drawing fouls will be a lot harder.

Fr. He’s a perfect example of a pure volume shooter. All he does is throw up threes and layups all game. I’m not saying he’s a bad player by any means. I’m just saying his arsenal is predictable yet effective, but it also allows for games where he shoots like 1/16 from three because his enormous usage rate, and it also allows good defenders to clamp down on him. Nowhere near the same realm as Kobe, Tmac, AI, etc.

Kawhi has those long arms and can give his defender all kinds of space from him body but Jimmy B doesn’t stop playing physical all night. I think why James Harden struggles so much against Jimmy Butler, and Kawhi Leonard is that, playing a great defensive player (JB/Kawhi) or a great defensive team (Bulls/ Spurs) forces you to be efficient. That is to say, you need to attack on the move before the defense - player or team - can set their feet, you need to make hard dribble drives so that the defense is forced to give you some space. Think of all the times Kobe lit up Shane Battier; it wasn't because Shane was defending poorly, it's just that Kobe was sprinting around screens to get space, taking a lot of one dribble pull ups just to get a clean look at the basket, posting up more to get easier shots and hitting the offensive glass a ton. Harden is just a really inefficient player. Part of that is how many fouls he draws - a fair few of them aren't fouls, but only players like Butler and Leonard get that benefit of the doubt. However, because of all the fouls, Harden assumes that defenders will give him a cushion; but when he isn't getting all those calls, he becomes a very average driver (he doesn't elevate all that well in traffic, he's not a great athlete to begin with, and he almost always goes left). He shoots threes well because he is typically shooting with a cushion, but take that away, and he is a very average shooter. Back to his inefficiency: when he's not in transition, he typically doesn't sprint or run hard with the ball, which makes him inherently easier to guard, and he's so limited in the ways he scores (a ton of isolation, a ton of transition, a lot of pick and roll and that's it), that teams can take away his strengths easily, like Butler did here, Klay Thompson did in the playoffs last year, etc. This is just an observation watching from watching him a lot. Also, on another note, I'm surprised the Bulls are abandoning their defensive identity under Fred Hoidberg. Obviously he's an offensive coach, but they have so many players that just love to defend (Hinrich, Noah, Jimmy Butler, Pau Gasol was built to play defense with that wingspan). Obviously offensive issues are their undoing every year, but I thought they would've just hired some offensive minded assistants that could've sophisticated their offense, without sacrificing the defense that they've hung their hat on as an elite team since 2011. I am just of the mind that a defense that consistent and dominant is something you don't sacrifice unless you have something that's definitely an upgrade. They have the personnel to be potent enough offensively that their defense could still remain intact even as their offense grew. I just think it's a shame that they got rid of Tom Thibodeau after he single-handedly made them an east Superpower.
