From reading some interviews given by Tony Allen, he really does seem to study up on certain player's tendencies and also recognizes the opposition's go-to plays; hence how he is able to predict so well. But there are also times that I feel he either expends way more energy than necessary (such as when he finds himself behind plays), or gambles a bit much, like going under screens against shooters. His wildness is fun to watch, but sometimes you can see the diminishing returns.
@gthedragon172 жыл бұрын
I beg to disagree. The more energy he expends on defense, the more energy the opposing offensive player expends as well. Why do you think Kobe and KD said he was the best defender they played against?

Coach Mike awesome video. By the way one hidden technique very good defenders have is good conditioning. It takes a lot of hustle to be a good defender and if you don't have the conditioning you will not be able to offer a lot of pressure no matter how bad you want to. Basically laziness is a staple of bad defenders

Great Vid. I noticed that most of the plays highlighted in this video (and many of the others you have for that matter) Allen is making a play with his left hand. Allen is right handed. Is this just coincidence or are they strategically doing this when defending right handed players?

wanted to asked a question about stances, upward or waist bent but i see its been asked for obv reasons. someone might think this vid is a prob given all the times youve said "bend at the waist so you can poke for steals, dont be to rigid and upright" but im assuming yr not contradicting yrself cos yr saying if stances for diff situations?
@LockdownDefense8 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are definitely different opportunities for both. Bending at the waist allows you to put a lot of pressure on the ball, as well as go for steals. Upward stance doesn't' give you the same opportunity to go for a steal, but makes staying in front easier. Really depends on your condition/agility compared to your opponent. I have clips of Tony Allen bending at the waist, getting into a lockdown stance, but most of the time he doesn't. So I just wanted to accurately represent him.
@megag528 жыл бұрын
Coach Mike yeah i guess its all about situation. might be a good thing to do a vid on. cheers mate grt job

So what's better? an upward stance or a low stance like everyone else? I just want to make my man goes nowhere!
@deflatedbasketball56888 жыл бұрын
onemogain23 low stance is better because you can basically smother your defender and reach to the ball farther. If you stand up I guess you can stop a high pass but I'll chose low stance because it has more positives than high one
@LockdownDefense8 жыл бұрын

@onemogain238 жыл бұрын
yeah I'm mostly focusing on staying in front of my man at all times because my stance is more upright and it's hard as hell to defend the 3 and the drive man to man, I haven't used the lower stance yet, but I think it'll be easier for me to stick defense on the 3 and on the drive.
@coupdeangrace45217 жыл бұрын
onemogain23 if you have longer arms and are conditioned well, standing is the way because you can reach and stay in front. It shorter and have small arms and I go down and be ferocious. The one thing you got to have is passion to try on defense. Not enough people do
@LuckyC17236 жыл бұрын
I’m all for Tony Allen and this video but it seems a bit misleading. To me a lockdown defender (which I agree Tony Allen is) is a player who can keep their man in front of them for the whole duration of the shot clock. What he does in this video is exceptional, but I don’t feel like it’s lockdown defense, it’s to me great timing and anticipation.

you covered what to do when the dribbler does an outside-hand layup: jump behind them towards their outside shoulder and block with your inside hand. so what do you do then if the dribbler you're guarding decides to go for the inside hand layup instead of the outside hand layup? just go straight up?
@LockdownDefense8 жыл бұрын
Good move by the offensive player to recognize you're on the outside and go up with the inside hand. Hopefully your help defense will be able to alter the shot in that case. But if you know your opponent does that in advance, then just stay in between the basket
