When Sean Lock died Jimmy Carr told the story that on that day when they arrived at the studio the first thing Sean did was ask Jimmy if he was OK, as in genuinely concerned about him - Jimmy then said that he was fine and basically told Sean to not hold back, a challenge that he accepted with great enthusiasm!

Cameron, the prime minister at the time, famously interrupted an international meeting in order to give a TV interview where he ripped into Jimmy for being a tax dodger, all while being guilty of doing exactly the same thing himself.

Carr's scheme wasn't illegal, and he paid in full when it was brought to his attention. Gary Barlow, pop star, and noted Tory donor, was involved in an illegal scheme, and, based on what I read about a year ago, never fully repaid the tax (that may have changed, but I've not seen that it has) Cameron never said a word - "we do not comment on individual cases" was his response when asked. I'm sure that Barlow's long financial support didn't factor into this.
@user-fl8yv7rz6f3 ай бұрын
@@rog2224 apparently Cameron's father had used the same avoidance loophole as Jimmy's economist/accountant had, I never mentioned illegal and used dodger as it was quite artful and I never understood why he didn't just tell them to f off, apologising for it was way too much.

The thing to really understand is that Jimmy had not broken any laws but he was genuine in his apology, paid all the tax that he had avoided through perfectly legal loopholes (that still exist) and took the criticism with grace and good humour. Hence why his career was never really affected and the likes of Gary Barlow should have received as strong criticism as Jimmy. Especially as the amount of tax he avoided was probably higher than Jimmy.

Also: What he did wasn't illegal by any means. It was only scandal because a beloved celebrity exploited a loophole and the tabloids just ignored the fact that anyone could've done it. YOU can probably do it right now if you were so minded. And it wasn't even him who did it, it was his accountant. If we were to compare it to Angus Deaytons situation with hookers and blow in a seedy motel, that was actually illegal and it was all his own idea. And Angus didn't own it at all. He just tried to not talk about it while Jimmy was and still is making self deprecating jokes about the situation. The way he handled it made people love him more. Angus did the opposite and just succumbed to the situation. I'm pretty sure Angus would still have a great career if he just owned his fuckup rather than trying to hide it.

One of the shows he was on, he explained it as, his accountant asked him if he wanted to pay less tax, he asked if it was all legal, the accountant said yes, who would say no actually, I want to pay more tax than I need to.

I know people love your cackle, and I'm not saying I dislike it. However, that reminded me of the Wizard of OZ and the Wicked Witch of the West 😀I seem to remember hearing Jimmy really being worried after his brush with the law and his tax problems, until Sean Lock who was 😭one of the main captains and his mate, convinced him to carry on and take it on the chin. That's why Sean kept referencing it, made a joke of it (burning him) and helped him carry on with his life.

This was absolutely the bast way to deal with it. He did something dodgy, owned up to it, no BS excuses, paid the money back and moved on. If he was being snidey back it would not go over well. He basically had to sit there and take it.

He didn't get "caught." That would mean he did something illegal. He didn't evade taxes, he followed the tax laws to the letter... including the loopholes in said laws. The list he was on was filled with high ranking politicians so the prime minister threw him under the bus so people would talk about him and not them and loads of multi-milionairs and billionairs for doing the exact same. But again, he didn't break any laws, he broke the public's trust.

Sean's joke about the queen was not bad timing at the time of the clip because it was way before the queen died, but then I think the best time to start joking about a dead person is before the body gets cold. After all, what do they care? They're dead.

'last joke' wasn't bad timing... it was facts, and the best/most ironic joke of the clip was Sean Lock about the Queen. Don't ever be afraid about laughing to facts, and don't ever be afraid the UK's perception of head of state... 90% of us know its a farce... you won't lose any fans :)

In defense of Jimmy, as to your comment about how he only was sorry when he got caught... he probably legitimately didn't know he was doing anything "unethical" until it was caught. It was legal. His accountant suggested it. Why would anyone think anything of it? I usually file my taxes through turbo tax and I trust that they're doing it correctly. I don't go through them line by line to guess how the nation might feel about each item.
@MandyCaneLane2 жыл бұрын
"Turbo Tax" sounds funny! Taxes work very different here in Argentina, so honestly I know nothing about how they work in other countries 🤷🏻♀️

@@MandyCaneLane Legitimately, my very first real job was as a tax preparer, so I understand WAY too much... granted, that's the American tax system. I know nothing of the UK's. Seems to me that if you design the system with loopholes, you shouldn't get mad when people use them.

Admitting that he just didn't think really has a lot of power for me. He just didn't think it through and made a terrible error in judgment sounds just so honest to me when he said it.
@TheycallmeMrWonka2 жыл бұрын
More accuurately. I think it was a case of him leaving the accountant to deal with the tax stuff and they do what they do, avoid as much as possible, find all the loopholes. In Jimmy's case i think it was an ignorance is bliss, see no evil hear no evil kind of thing. He was definitely in the wrong in the sense he'd rip politicians a new one for the same thing and had never actually told his "people" lets do the right thing and pay what's owed.

Another great reaction enjoyed your introduction, as entertaining as the show you are reacting to I think. What is strange from my POV is that I never liked Jimmy Carr's humour apart from when he appeared on one of these panel shows. he found his niche or I found a niche I like him in ?. not sure of that sentence but I do enjoy him as host of this show, each of their comedic styles bounces well off each other. I totally get your observation of the voice of the dancer, sorry I don't know his name and sounds like Sid aka John Leguizamo, the only reason I get the reference is I was watching The Ice Age over the weekend.. 😅😅

I would not call it bad timing about the Queen not paying taxes, because 1st it`s true and the monarcy should be ended, 2nd he died years before her.
