When Sean Lock died Jimmy Carr told the story that on that day when they arrived at the studio the first thing Sean did was ask Jimmy if he was OK, as in genuinely concerned about him - Jimmy then said that he was fine and basically told Sean to not hold back, a challenge that he accepted with great enthusiasm!

Also it was Jimmy Carr's producer which told him the best way to have it blow over is not to fight it and just accept responsibility and it worked. Oh and James Corden was calling him everyday as a friend just asking him if it was okay. Jimmy Carr said he learnt who his friends were, as some of them wanted him to be taken down a peg. Jimmy Carr was having a really tough week at the time and this gave him very high anxiety.

Cameron, the prime minister at the time, famously interrupted an international meeting in order to give a TV interview where he ripped into Jimmy for being a tax dodger, all while being guilty of doing exactly the same thing himself.

Carr's scheme wasn't illegal, and he paid in full when it was brought to his attention. Gary Barlow, pop star, and noted Tory donor, was involved in an illegal scheme, and, based on what I read about a year ago, never fully repaid the tax (that may have changed, but I've not seen that it has) Cameron never said a word - "we do not comment on individual cases" was his response when asked. I'm sure that Barlow's long financial support didn't factor into this.
@user-fl8yv7rz6f

@@rog2224 apparently Cameron's father had used the same avoidance loophole as Jimmy's economist/accountant had, I never mentioned illegal and used dodger as it was quite artful and I never understood why he didn't just tell them to f off, apologising for it was way too much.

The thing to really understand is that Jimmy had not broken any laws but he was genuine in his apology, paid all the tax that he had avoided through perfectly legal loopholes (that still exist) and took the criticism with grace and good humour. Hence why his career was never really affected and the likes of Gary Barlow should have received as strong criticism as Jimmy. Especially as the amount of tax he avoided was probably higher than Jimmy.

@@_WeDontKnow_ it’s also worth remembering that it was Tax Avoidance that he had done and so was only subject to public scorn. Tax Evasion is a criminal offence and would have seen him facing the possibility of prison, as happened to Lester Piggot the jockey and I think Ken Dodd came close to prison too.

Also: What he did wasn't illegal by any means. It was only scandal because a beloved celebrity exploited a loophole and the tabloids just ignored the fact that anyone could've done it. YOU can probably do it right now if you were so minded. And it wasn't even him who did it, it was his accountant. If we were to compare it to Angus Deaytons situation with hookers and blow in a seedy motel, that was actually illegal and it was all his own idea. And Angus didn't own it at all. He just tried to not talk about it while Jimmy was and still is making self deprecating jokes about the situation. The way he handled it made people love him more. Angus did the opposite and just succumbed to the situation. I'm pretty sure Angus would still have a great career if he just owned his fuckup rather than trying to hide it.

@@laupstad A Ds situ was a totally different one though, as he was still married at the time, with possibly a child too, so there were far more serious things to sort. Also, I H and P M went for hime on the next HIGNFY, just like J R and S L on this show. But Angus did deal with it as best as he could, and the next episode, there was no mention of it by any of the parties. Only on I think the next series, when he refered to a guests husband of Christine Hamilton as the "Disgraced" so and so in the Odd one out round, that when Christine said, "Well if he is disgraced, what are you", to which Angus had no answer. And after that episode, they realised if they wanted to save the show, Angus had to go, as he had been the presenter for nearly 12 years, but he owuld never be able to moch any of the guests, as they could throw it back at him, so that is why he "had" to leave the show. far different circumstances than J Cs situ. Also, A D has had a fine career since he left HIGNFY anyway.

There's another classic moment like this from British TV history. When Angus Deayton was presenting "Have I Got News For You" A show that was a satirical review of the weeks news. Angus had just been in the news for his taste for cocaine and hookers, he ended up leaving the show, it was beyond the point of no return. He'd lost all credibility, he could no longer sit in that chair abusing others when he had been caught out... But the one show they made after the story broke is a classic.

I mean I like JC as much as the next guy but it's not like a poor guy suffered consequences for shoplifting a piece of pork to feed their family because that is ACTUALLY punished with jailtime. And people just think its a joke. This is how it worked out for him. Rich wanker thought he shouldn't pay tax and now we're all laughing about it. Poor wanker doing 3-5 for missing a hundredth of that amount... Are you still laughing? Two options, 1. No, of course not, I'm not a fucking sociopath. Or 2. Yeah, I'm a fucking sociopath. Don't worry though, with inflation and interest rates as well as transport prices going up you'll soon get to the point where you will pay no taxes because you'll be on food stamps.

The British public were far more forgiving of Jimmy than we were for a lot of others for two reasons I think. One, he makes us laugh, we forgive a LOT more of someone who can do that. But two, he also didn't try to make excuses, at all. Just said yeah, I did that, it was wrong. And that was it. Most people would have done the same in that situation, even if many don't like to admit to it. So him just straight up admitting to a wrong doing, and apologising, it was refreshing, felt honest, and it's all we really want from that kind of situation

I like how the show’s producers didn’t can him but had him keep hosting and publicly take his medicine. How many hosts would privately slink off or be fired these days. Instead he’s gotten roasted ever since. Again, it was a relatively minor transgression, but I love that he took his lumps on the air.

Jimmy handled this tax evasion revelation in a way that made audiences forgive him: Carr, the master of the inappropriate joke, never ever made a joke about this himself. He left it to every other comedian to roast him about it for ever more. And John hit the nail on the head, with Drs and Nurses and teachers not being funded enough because of people taking advantages of loopholes. Jimmy had to take that on live TV, and so he should.

Technically Jimmy didn't break any laws, but we hold people we like to a higher standard in the UK. I bet you when this story broke half of the government picked up the phone to their financial advisors and I have no doubt some of them were guilty of exactly the same thing. I love how Jimmy handles it, and owns it, and even today still jokes about it, and takes jibes aimed at him. He isn't the first beloved entertainer to take bad financial advice. (the older ones amongst us will remember Ken Dodd) and he certainly will not be the last. Loved the reaction, and great new intro.

He didn't get "caught." That would mean he did something illegal. He didn't evade taxes, he followed the tax laws to the letter... including the loopholes in said laws. The list he was on was filled with high ranking politicians so the prime minister threw him under the bus so people would talk about him and not them and loads of multi-milionairs and billionairs for doing the exact same. But again, he didn't break any laws, he broke the public's trust.

In defense of Jimmy, as to your comment about how he only was sorry when he got caught... he probably legitimately didn't know he was doing anything "unethical" until it was caught. It was legal. His accountant suggested it. Why would anyone think anything of it? I usually file my taxes through turbo tax and I trust that they're doing it correctly. I don't go through them line by line to guess how the nation might feel about each item.

More accuurately. I think it was a case of him leaving the accountant to deal with the tax stuff and they do what they do, avoid as much as possible, find all the loopholes. In Jimmy's case i think it was an ignorance is bliss, see no evil hear no evil kind of thing. He was definitely in the wrong in the sense he'd rip politicians a new one for the same thing and had never actually told his "people" lets do the right thing and pay what's owed.

Another great reaction enjoyed your introduction, as entertaining as the show you are reacting to I think. What is strange from my POV is that I never liked Jimmy Carr's humour apart from when he appeared on one of these panel shows. he found his niche or I found a niche I like him in ?. not sure of that sentence but I do enjoy him as host of this show, each of their comedic styles bounces well off each other. I totally get your observation of the voice of the dancer, sorry I don't know his name and sounds like Sid aka John Leguizamo, the only reason I get the reference is I was watching The Ice Age over the weekend.. 😅😅
