I feel so bad for both Jimmy and Howard here. Jimmy is genuinely trying to help Chuck out of his love for him. Howard is forced to be the scapegoat out of loyalty to Chuck and his vendetta against Jimmy. Say what you will about Chuck being right about Jimmy, he turned on or manipulated the people who actually cared about him, and set the Saul journey into motion. And Howard didn’t deserve to die for it.

"Jimmy is genuinely trying to help Chuck out of his love for him" Jimmy wanted a piece of the millions that Chuck would get for withdrawing from the firm. He loved his brother but he went through the trouble of confronting Howard because he figured he could convince Chuck to give him some of the payout.
@samteenoise2 ай бұрын
Chuck wasn't right about Jimmy, it was a self fulfilling profecy. If Chuck didn't resent Jimmy for being more charismatic and loveable than him, Jimmy would have never been set on the path of becoming Saul. Jimmy himself said this when he told Mike he knew what was stopping him (from doing shady stuff), and this was right after he found out that no matter how good of a lawyer he was, or what good he could do, Chuck would never like him or be proud of him.

He was actually the one doing the lying and manipulating. Chuck didn't actually want out of the firm; Jimmy was trying to get Chuck to cash him out anyway because he wanted the money (maybe, charitably, because he though Chuck was as materialistic as he was and was in it for the money, but also no doubt because he thought he himself would see some of it).

Not sure it was intended since they said that their initial idea was for Howard to be the bad guy, but you can already tell here that he didn't dislike Jimmy at all. He sees him interrupting his private meeting while initiating the conversation with a pretty unprofessional movie quote, and he just smiles. He respects his hustle. He admires the guts he's showing by facing up to these people that are clearly of much higher status professionally speaking, and daring to turn the room into his own little theater. The signs were there from the start.

I forgot about how much the creators remember from the earlier parts of the series. That music playing as Jimmy is watching Howard talking to the Kettlemans is him descend into a life of crime and unethical conduct. Jimmy and Kim then share a cigarette in the HHM parking garage with a light angle behind them facing downward symbolizing their journey throughout the pre BB timeline. This same music is playing in as Jimmy and Kim are having their last scene together sharing a cigarette in front of a light angle that is facing upward symbolizing redemption.

In retrospect, this was one of many scenes that Howard and Jimmy look like two younger brothers arguing about how best to take care of their older brother. For Howard, it’s doing everything Chuck tells him to do. For Jimmy, it’s doing what’s best for Chuck.
@Alex_From_Florida2 ай бұрын
4:15 not only does this kick off the events of the show (sparking the idea of taking the Kettlemans launder money), but this quote really sums up a lot of characters in the show: Jimmy and Kim’s fall from grace, followed by them choosing to confess to their crimes on their own in the final episodes, Gus’ final scene in the show, Chuck’s pride and unending hatred for his brother, and of course, the rise and fall of Walter White
@eitangellis2 ай бұрын
The irony is that this is followed by Howard welcoming the Kettlemans to his firm, making his words to Jimmy feel hollow Of course, it’s not really Howard’s fault that they ended up choosing HHM, but the specific timing of it made his advice to Jimmy fall on deaf ears. Funnily enough, this kind of bad timing happens a lot to Howard in this show.

Funny how howard was originally meant to be the villian before they realized that it didnt work. Probably because howard was a flat villian and he doesnt do anything that villianous. Chuck on the other hand they realized that his charater had some deap rooted jelousy and some of it isnt without valid reasoning. He would of made a more vompelling protagonist and it would flip why jimmy wanted to change on its head. Pretty much everything in season 1 jimmy does is in some way linked to making chuck proud. Season 2 he isnt motivated to make chuck proud but, instead jimmy is kotivated to play by his own rules

I was so caught up in Jimmy winning I completely misjudged Howard. He was one of the good ones. One of the few characters that didn't let life change who he was. Even at the very end when at rock bottom and confronting JImmy and Kim, he was still demonstrating and pronouncing his ability to land on his feet. Although his fate was tragic his attitude was kind of heroic.
@SheanWalsh46Ай бұрын
@@dab88believe me or not, eventually, Howard would recovered like he said and would sue both Jimmy and Kim for defamation and his name will be clear afterwards. The things is, Howard is arguably more powerful than Chuck, not only he owned a firm company, but also, he got few friends and connections to back him up and the results of that scam will eventually backfired one way or another. So, Lalo was indirectly saving Jimmy and Kim when Lalo killed him.

@RavenDreadful2 ай бұрын
This is actually Howard’s first scene! Which is great because it shows you both the fact that Howard is the antagonist for now in Jimmy’s story since he presently stands as his roadblock to his goals, but also shows that Howard actually kinda appreciates Jimmy’s panache. I’d imagine Howard almost feels a little brother relationship towards Jimmy as well given that he’s his best friend’s younger brother! As pretentious as Howard’s last line in this scene sounds, it shows he isn’t just interested in “victory”. He wants to just enjoy the life he lives, and Jimmy acts counter to that as he is always searching for MORE
@dubbeking2 ай бұрын
@@RavenDreadful Yes, but from what I heard, the characterizations of Chuck and Howard were rewritten during the filming of S1, where Chuck was turned into the antagonist of S1-3 and Howard was given a more sympathetic role. Would be interesting if Howard having a bit of a spot for Jimmy's quirks were actually part of him from the start.
@RavenDreadful2 ай бұрын
@@dubbeking it really seem that way though! And yeah Howard was initially written to be the season 1 antagonist but even here we see he’s still basically a good guy.
