there’s actually a term for this if you’re curious. I ran into it in recent weeks and thought it was so cool, and your comment reminded me of it. he’s called a static character (simple enough, no?). it can be very difficult to use them well. a relatively straightforward example is a villain/hero - they are the bad/good guys early on and they remain so throughout the plot. an interesting example as with Howard is that we realize nuance as the story goes on, but on review it turns out they were basically the same person throughout the plot. we can see these traits early on, it’s just that we assign new value to them now in knowing the full plot. another example of thinking of characters in this way are dynamic characters - like who you mention apart from Howard. the point of them is to change as the plot progresses, for example: Walter White.

@@redalius1928 the great thing about BCS and BB is that it makes you root for the main characters to such an extent that you end up using whataboutisms to defend their actions. I resonate with Howard. I've done questionable things for the sake of making my mentor proud of me. Turned my back on mutual friends simply because she said I should; people I had no issue with. Her sentiments became mine; if she said someone was a problem and had to go, and she'd say these things about anyone who questioned her, I believed her. Even with little to no evidence backing her up. Her mood impacted my day/mood. Good days were ones where she was happy and we got along well. Bad days were any when she was disapproving of something I said or did. Even after losing her, I felt as if I lost a great opportunity. She wasn't a good person, but in my head I think of her as someone great. I miss her, I despise her, and I feel as if a piece of me is gone for having lost her.

Relationships can be complicated that's for sure. Not that I'm saying she was abusive, but you can see even in those cases the victims can still look at their abusers with rose tinted glasses. It's good you seem to be honest to yourself about the relationship and that's what's most important. However, emotions don't always make sense. I guess just acknowledge what you went through, feel what you feel, and try to make better choices next time. Hope you're doing OK.

If Jimmy had been taken into HHM, he would have probably worked hard to impress his brother. He might have become 'clean' too. But Chuck drove Jimmy away from that. And Jimmy did what he did best - be Saul. Every time Chuck could have been supportive, he wasn't, making Jimmy even more disgusted by this upstanding world. And he slipped back to what he knew best. Had Chuck not thrown Jimmy off the cliff so many times, maybe Jimmy would stop slippin'.
