Jacob DeShazer who was one of crew in the Doolittle raid was shot down, captured by the Japanese and held captive in Japan for 40 months. While a POW in Japan he was given a Bible and was converted as he read the words of Romans 10 vs 9. He later had an amazing friendship with Japanese general Mitsuo Fochida who earlier had bombed pearl harbour. Fochida read DeShazer's booklet called "I was a prisoner in Japan" leading to his own conversion. Jacob DeShazer later attended Mistua Fochidas funeral and he said..." I wept,I wept for my brother." An amazing story of forgiveness and reconciliation

I've heard of this guy on occasion, but never knew the story behind his life or why he was significant. Great to finally find out who he was!

The Japanese didn't kill tens of thousands of Chinese in retaliation. Most put the number at over 150,000. Highest estimate is 250,000.

I met Dick Cole a few years before he died. The man was still sharp as a tack at over 100 years old.

The unit started at US Arny Air Force base Lexington in South Carolina. There is an island in (at their time) many islands to target. “Doolittle island” became bombing island in Lake Murray SC. After a brief time, Col. Doolittle moved the exercise to Eglin Army AF base (which in 1942 was a boondock location as opposed to Lexington/Columbia SC the state capital). I was honored to be the VIP Police plainclothes escort of Richard Cole when he visited The newly renamed “Columbia Bomber Stadium” (a NY Mets affiliate South Atlantic League team, lower A minors). I wish I knew then what I know now about the hero I escorted.

When i was a resrvist for a couple of years, Dolittle was a sponsor of our unit. I never me the great man, but his influencce on our unit was unmistakable. We won the Spaatz Award despite being a reserve unit. He was an inspiration in that.

Doolittle lived and worked in St. Louis when he was at Shell during the 1930s. The Shell Building where he worked in downtown St. Louis still exists.

RAF??? The icon for the video shows a B25 with an RAF rondel, not the "Stars and Bars" rondel used on the raid? The **Royal Air Force (RAF)** did fly the North American B-25 Mitchell. The RAF operated several squadrons equipped with the B-25 Mitchell
