These fellows knew how to do it; Jimmy, in particular, being the supreme master. It's wondrous that so many of his late-career performances were captured for posterity on film in the TV Age!

I always liked Durante when I was a child during the 1960s and early 1970s.He was hilarious.Desi Arnaz was handsome, but he knew it, too.

A backstory to this encounter is that Durante was a mob favorite, and after Arnaz’s rum running father moved his family from Cuba to Miami, his pal Al Capone drew Desi into the family and Arnaz became a playmate of Al’s son, Sonny Capone. But it was Arnaz who produced The Untouchables series about Chicago Jazz Age gangsters that so infuriated Al’s widow that she sued Desilu for damages. She lost.

His father was the Mayor of his town and his mother's family were owners of Bicardi Rum. When Batista took power in Cuba, Desi's father was jailed and their property confiscated. Desi went to Miami (he didn't speak any English) and went to a Jesuit school because he was going to a Jesuit school in Cuba. He met Sonny Capone at school and they became friends because they were both outcasts (hard to believe now but no one spoke Spanish in Florida in the 1930's).

Desi gave Jimmy the opportunity to film several of his "TEXACO STAR THEATER" shows at Desilu while he was appearing in Las Vegas during the spring and summer of 1955....he also convinced Jimmy to appear as a guest on an episode of "THE MOTHERS-IN-LAW" in 1968 (where everyone was doing a Durante impression!). @@teo5836 I’m reading Keith Thibodeaux’s memoir (Little Ricky on “I Love Lucy”), and he became a born-again Christian in his 20’s. I’d think he would have mentioned in his book if Desi and Lucy practiced the occult, but maybe he wouldn’t have known since he was only a kid - although he did remain friends with Desi Jr even after the show ended, well into his teens. I did find it disturbing that in Lucy’s memoir there isn’t a single mention of God. In Desi’s memoir he does mention God a couple times, when he was in a desperate situation and prayed, but if God had been a major presence in Desi’s life, I’d think he would have said so.
