A big thanks GreatA. I think Jimmy Ellis fought a brilliant fight tactically. Angelo Dundee and Jimmy had obviously studied Jerry's style in detail. As you say, they were both counter-punchers and this may not have made for a great match so far as action is concerned. But the tactics are worth studying! Thanks again GreatA, your site is fantastic.

The fact that Patterson was permitted to take part in this tournament and Liston wasn't further proves that the whole thing was a joke.

I've been waiting for years to see this - thanks for postings. I realize these fella's were counter punchers, but they should have let it all out in the last round..the booing that started in the ending seconds was well deserved - great historical footage though (early on when the belts started getting separated)....

Both Quarry and Ellis were also counter-punchers by nature so a cautious, tactical affair was to be expected. When the opponent brought the fight to Quarry, like Spencer did, he got busy. Against Ellis he didn't have the same opportunities.

im guilty.i underestimated ellis.i never thought he could stand up to quarry or floor bonavena.he was good ,real good

Been waiting for this, gracias. Quarry won a slow tactical MD against Patterson, looked like gangbusters against Spencer, then losing a slow MD against Ellis. Yank Durham had Quarry as I did, but Ellis + white trunks + brief impersonations of Ali + Dundee in his corner was the house fighter. Fans moaning about today's heavies forget all the slow "Golden Era" bouts like this one. They couldn't outhustle Cunningham or outmuscle Huck and Lebedev today w/o changing pace/style/training.

I was in 2d infantry div 68=69 didn't get to see nor hear the fight. But as a strong gray man...we loved JQ

The fight may have been slow (keep in mind it was 15 rounds) but today's cruiserweights are poor in comparison. With Marco Huck you wonder if he's ever been taught to box aside from throwing his wild right hand. Both of the fighters here certainly have far more class.

@TheGreatA ---good point. Quarry KO'd some real punchers---Mac Lewis, Shavers, Lyle, but didnt look particularly good here. Styles make fights

scored 7/6/2 Quarry, although v close,and one of Jerry's poorest fights,but apparently he had two broken bones in his back

@kentmotsinger --but most of those KOs were against lesser opponents. And that is still a lower KO % than most champs.

Cunningham has silly height/reach & would keep both well at range/outwork em as a technical boxer. Huck has improved his boxing & bigger than listed. Unless Ellis shows up in better shape ready to run, don't see it, esp w/ Lebedev being a bruising southpaw KO pressure specialist. Quarry was young, his best coming later vs Mac Foster. That version has a chance against Huck, not against Lebedev who is hugely strong & awkward. Point is plenty of golden era "stinkers" w/crowd booing Ellis-thanx

@loyaldude10 I'm not sure that Ellis was that light of a puncher, He had 24 knockouts in 40 wins. 8 were in the first round, according to Box Rec. If you watch Ellis vs Shavers on You Tube, he almost KO'D him in the first round, before getting stopped himself.

Quarry said his back was a problem but I think his style and desire were a problem.Eddie Futch. would of made Quarry a winner but Eddie nevertheless never trained him.You cannot win by saving your punches.So I am sorry but Jerry was wasteing talent.
