Wonderful teacher, very willing to share his creative genius with others. He did a clinic at El Camino College in Torrance, Ca. back in the 1990s which I attended. He asked for student volunteers to come up and play. I immediately jumped up and was able to play drums behind him and the band. His brother Tootie was there in the audience watching so I was rather nervous. Jimmy taught me the difference between improvisation and "comprovisation" which is instant composition. I had never heard of that word. Very nice man and a very evolved saxman plus all around musician. He is greatly missed along with so many others from his era.

@@filliusjazzarchive He said that improvisation is when you take a pattern and change it by adding or taking notes away. Or playing the same pattern with different accents, inflections etc. Then he stated that comprovisation is when you begin playing something that, to your knowledge, you have never played before or perhaps even heard before. It's a goal for musicians to stretch themselves creatively into that category rather than playing the same riffs over and over. He told me this concept applies to drummers as well. He was right. I learned a lot from him that day.
