Saw JJ&V in 1968 at Winsford Civic hall, my girlfriend then, cried through this version, remember the gig vividly and I'm now 66years old. My favourite single of all time......... now where did I put my scooter?

I saw Jimmy James sing this definitive version live of a superb song penned by Neil Diamond at the pavilion Ballroom in Bournemouth back in the early nineties and it was fantastic!!!👌👍🤗

UB40 did a nice cover of this song in the 80s, but nothing - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING - can top this version. It was the one I grew up with in the 60s. We had the 45!

I really love this version. I hadn't heard it for ages and had forgotten how great is. I saw Jimmy and the Vagabonds at the Leas Cliff Hall Folkestone, I think it was 1967 or 68 and they were fantastic live too. Very under rated band . Thanks for posting it brought back lots of memories good and bad

I just found this, after doing a Google check. I was gigging with a Showband from Northern Ireland and we were on Brodig (Isle of Arran) where, amongst other gigs, we opened for Jimmy James. The hall was almost empty. But it showed me that even professionals have to do empty dates, like anyone else. Anyway I had a great time just sitting there listening to them. They did their show and it was brilliant. I went back for the next term to university, in Glasgow, and people thought I was boasting when I talked about it. They were professionals! It was an honor to have been there!

I saw Jimmy James and the Vagabonds at Farnborough in 1967 l think it was. Then more recently at the Anvil Basingstoke on the same bill as Gino Washington & P P Arnold. I’d forgotten just how good he was, on a par with Otis Redding. He and P P Arnold did a duet. Superb.

I agree, it is a complicated song and this version does justice to the original, which is the forlorn song of an alcoholic's troubled soul. UB 40 made it a drinking dancing tune and amazingly both diametrically opposed versions are superb.

Brings back memories of Aberdeen University Union, the Dungeon café /restaurant there, and this playing on the juke box, probably in the autumn of 1968. To me, this is infinitely superior to the later version by UB40, which enjoyed so much more success in the charts.
