I had the privilage of seeing Jimmy Webb last year in a small,intimate show here in Okla. City. I am a 52 year old died in the wool rock and roller. It took me years to come to appreciate the art of this kind of songwriting. This man has written some of the greatest songs...ever. He played around an hour and then left the small stage. We got him back for an encore and of course he played Galveston...my personal fave. I actually started crying and when he left the stage and walked by me he saw me. He kind of grabbed my arm and said something like " that's what that song is supposed to do ". Man that was a great night. Thanks Jimmy.

+scarecrowbike Oklahoma seems to produce more than their share of caring and wonderful people. Having previously worked in the blood industry, I believe Okies are the most generous in the nation. Your state is fortunate to have the Oklahoma Blood Institute. It is an excellent organization and should be supported above the others.

Thanks for sharing that amazing anecdote about what in fact is the moment that means the most to a songwriter. The one you shared. (Just quoted in my posting this day, citing you as a 'kindred spirit.' Thanks again, Jerry Murphy. I have a "Jimmy Webb" thread going in the "other celebrities" section of the Forums at Sinatra Family dot com -- quoting you this day.

Yes, you said it best, Jimmy is a genius. Just watched his decade old live daytime TV appearance with Carly Simon. At the Sinatra Family dot com site I've opened a dormant Jimmy Webb thread (in the "other celebrities" section of their FORUMS) and commented this day on the significance of two great songwriters who wrote both words and music to all their songs "like Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and very few others." The few others, including Frank (Guys & Dolls) Loesser -- as they significantly picked one of his obscure songs (Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year) for their duet. Thanks for posting, John Terrana.

The moment that means the most to you as a songwriter Just watching this follow up (to Didn't We) -- Jimmy in his 20's singing BY THE TIME I GET TO PHOENIX (with the chords he had in mind when composing the song). I was moved to tears. Then I read the posted "comment" (below) from "Jerry Murphy" a kindred spirit! [Aren't we lucky to live in an era when a magical musical moment-in-time from several decades ago is here, at our fingertips to enjoy in the here and now. The novelty will never wear off.] ---- "I had the privilege of seeing Jimmy Webb last year in a small,intimate show here in Oklahoma City. I am a 52 year old dyed in the wool rock and roller. By the time I get to Phoenix she'll be rising She'll find the note I left hangin' on her door She'll laugh when she reads the part that says I'm leavin' 'Cause I've left that girl so many times before. By the time I make Albuquerque she'll be working She'll probably stop at lunch and give me a call But she'll just hear that phone keep on ringin' Off the wall, that's all. By the time I make Oklahoma she'll be sleepin' She'll turn softly and call my name out low And she'll cry just to think I'd really leave her Tho' time and time I try to tell her so She just didn't know I would really go.

If you think Glenn Campbell was a better singer, please check out Jimmy Webb's album called Ten Easy Pieces. You can find it on KZbin. The mature Webb gives us a hauntingly beautiful album, with unforgettable interpretations of his own writing. I loved Glenn Campbell also, but the songs are completely different sung by Webb. Ten Easy Pieces is a treasure to which you will regret listening.

One of the great composers, not terrible at piano either, and then there's his singing. I'll say this - you can hear him really trying. Given his composing and playing talent, he's got to know, right? Yeah, pass this one on to Glen...

Beautiful piano playing but it's too busy for the vocals, needs more space...good when Glenn did it to emphasize the vocals...
@dpeatebc72653 жыл бұрын
This is one of his better vocal efforts but it's amazing how much better Glen Campbell sounded on all his songs. Campbell gave the music its symmetry and tempo. Jimmy does some histrionic ad lib vocalizing here to add drama to the song, but the song is so melodic and subtle it really doesn't need it. He's one of the great story tellers as a lyricist and his melodies are always near perfect It just requires a better singer for that to come out. Cut to Glen Campbell and Marilyn Mccoo.

He may be a fabulous song writer but his playing does not fit the mood of the song at all.. and his singing is... well, as a fellow professional I wont comment

I really love his songs. They're brilliant. But I can't handle his un-musical voice and the way he interprets his own music. Others do a much better job, and that's one reason the songs were hits. As well, I could have done without the "I wish I were black" routine with the "oh yes she wills"... Embarrassing. I don't like his books either. I have two of them. Very disappointing.
