Jimmy Young did what he had to do here. He boxed smart, nullified George in the first half of the fight and came on late. Who would have believed almost 17 years after George left the ring in San Juan he'd once again be a world champion. What a story.

Much respect to Big George , this fight crystallizes what Ali said about him mostly being an arm swinging , telegraphing type fighter , if he had dug in to his punches and swung more from the hips he might have never lost and had a few decapations under his belt

Funny to notice that the ropes were also loose in this fight for Foreman lol PS : Jimmy Young had also a thing for him that nobody seem to really notice: Man he could take a punch, especially body punches ! ( if you watch his fight vs Norton, you'll understand what i mean ) If Young wouldn't have been considered as a defensive and "boring" fighter by the boxing buisness, he would have been easily a heavyweight champion in the late 70's. A great great fighter !

I've never heard a corner or fighter cry and complain to the referee more than Young and his corner did in this fight. Heck, I'm surprised they didn't add their complaints to the scorecard! Punches Thrown: 43, Punches Landed: 24, Complaints Made To The Ref: 59. Sheesh! Plus, after one of the many foul play cries, Young hit Foreman after the bell of round 3! Surprised his corner didn't complain to the ref about his own fighter there!

Young could feel confident because he already defeated Ali, but got hosed by the judges. To this day I remember the last line of the fight description in Ring Magazine saying if the fight had been between the man in the black trunks, and the man in the white trunks the man in the black trunks would have won, but the man in the white trunks was Muhammad Ali.

Young's corner had the referee totally on Young's side. He never warned Young for holding Foreman. Foreman tryed to keep his four arm up to keep Young from holding. He became less aggressive after repeated warnings from the referee and having a point taking away from him. Foreman stood to straight up and should have fought more recklessly against such a superb defensive fighter like Young.

Several were former Light Heavyweight and Cruserweight fighters who he knew wouldn’t have the power to hurt him. He struggling here in this fight and Lost to Jimmy Young. That’s why I get s kick out of people who say Foreman would have destroyed Holmes Lol… Look at Young’s jab giving George trouble and you don’t think Holmes jab wouldn’t ? Larry’s jab would close his eyes and Larry had good lateral movement and could throw the right hand off the jab as good as any fighter. Easy Work

I have it as pretty close to a draw, with George slightly ahead because he was the aggressor 99% of the time and more effective lands. Young got credit for a lot of punches that were just grazes or the crowd thought were good punches. Of course George got tired. He spent the whole fight chasing Young from one side of the ring to the other, and pushing him out of the clinches. George was tentative and should have just punched through Young's covers, from the start. I feel sure the Ali fight came to mind, for George, with the way young went to and leaned back against these loose ropes too. Body shots and a few upper cuts would have helped too. Young was not going to hurt him. No wonder George quit after this fight.
@cockoffgewgle4993

I had it as a draw as well. Young never hurt Foreman, Foreman hurt Young and nearly KO'd him. Recency bias of Young winning the last round (and probably the crowd) fooled the judges.

Just ridiculous - it was a unanimous decision .One judge had it 118-111, a lop- sided win for Young .Young easily won every round after the 7 th - 5 rounds ..This fight wasn’t even close and you think it was a draw ? …Young repeatedly hit Foreman with lead rights and combinations while Foreman landed little outside of the 7 th round .Foreman was a very limited fighter with no boxing skills and no stamina .If he didn’t land any heavy shots in the first few rounds, he was done .Any good boxer could clinch and move till Foreman was exhausted and easily beat him - like Ali and Young

To all you fools who keep saying Foreman would have destroyed Ali in a rematch in the mid-to-late '70s, did you just see THIS fight? Jimmy Young was a lesser boxer than Ali and even he was able to beat George on a unanimous decision. And all this false narrative talk about Foreman "had Ali in trouble" in Africa...GET REAL! Ali was never shaken by Foreman like Young was in the 7th round of this fight. As Ali said and Jimmy Young confirmed: If George hasn't knocked me out by Round 5, his parachute won't open. George was able to annihilate Frazier because he was short with a short reach so he had to got in close, therefore walking into Foreman's uppercuts. Ken Norton was NOTHING vs. Big Punchers (e.g., Ernie Shavers, Gerry Cooney), so, of course, Foreman devastated him. Ali had the height and reach that Frazier didn't have and the courage and chin Norton lacked. If Ali and Foreman fought 10 times in the '70s, Ali wins, at least, six. You people are never satisfied with Ali's performance and tactics vs. Big George. What was Ali supposed to do? Stick his chin out and let George hit it? SMH.
@jayedwards4787

Ali wins all those fights vs Foreman . Foreman was never going to hit Ali with his long telegraphed punches and never land successive shots. No one came close to a KO against Ali until his sad final years….Foreman was a very limited fighter with no defensive skills and no stamina , but most important, Foreman was a bully, his hero was Sonny Liston , so he was easily conned into punching himself out .All Foreman brought was a huge punch, for a few rounds , then he was impotent and pretty much helpless. Foreman went down more from exhaustion than the punches Ali and Young landed….Frazier beat Ali in the greatest hw fight ever, because he was a skilled fighter, was the best puncher of his era and had endless stamina and had no psychological problems …Frazier was never going to punch himself out or run out of gas . ..Frazier would have pummelled Young over the distance . A fighter like Frazier - pressure fighter with a punch and stamina -was a classic boxer’s worst nightmare …the classic boxer feasted on punchers like Foreman .

34:15 Save yourself some time and start viewing at Round 7. Up to then, it's nothing but Young back peddling, grabbing George's waist and George leaning down on him, and most of all Young and his camp complaining nonstop about what THEY think are dirty tactics by George during clinches (IMO Young's trainer should have been warned to STFU or be ejected, lol). Before round 7, it was a pretty even albeit lackluster affair with Young maybe ahead on points since they managed to get the ref to deduct a point from George for some totally unknown reason in an early round. Again, it was nothing but Young back peddling, George plodding after him, and neither one throwing/landing very many exciting punches and no real flurries of interest to speak of. What nonsense- the first 6 rounds was Young fighting a smart fight and dumb George unable to do anything.Foreman stunned Young in the 7 th, punched himself out , with Young coming on as the round ended.Then rounds 8-12 were Young putting a whipping on the tiring, exhausted Foreman , who went down in the 12 th .

After watching the Ali vs. Young fight I would think that there would have been some discussion on how Young got away with putting his head outside of the ring on several occasions? I can't find a word on it anywhere. To me, it was the most important part of the fight and why, IMO, Young should have been given a warning the first time, a point taken away the second time, and a disqualification the third time giving Ali the TKO. The ref, at one point earlier in the fight, started an 8 count, as if it was the equivalent of a knock-down, which I think it was. Those silly antics cost him the fight because it was clear Young out-fought Ali quite easily. Ali didn't land any power punches and only a few jabs and no one is a biger fan of Ali than me, but he didn't win but for Youngs cowardly antics.

Young clearly out boxed big George and he clearly out boxed Ali but with regard to Ali back in the day you really would have to beat the champ badly before the judges would give you the win. The tactic that Jimmy young was using on Ali of hitting and holding and sticking his head out the ring is probably the reason the judges gave Ali the win.

Burt Sugar was on an Ali espn show adamant that Young beat Ali, sitting next to Dundee, who just shot him a dirty look.

Big George made a tactical mistake in the early rounds, he should have focused in on body punches on Young and really pressured Jimmy. Young was fighting a purely defensive fight and keeping his head out of range which left his body wide open for George to pound on. By trying to hit Young's head Big george wasted too much energy and no payoff, leaving him with no energy left again ala the Ali fight and ripe for Youngs late round rally.

You scored it for Foreman? Not even close. What difference does it make if he was the aggressor? You score a fight based on clean blows. Not who's coming forward. If you score on aggressiveness, then Joe Frazier was ahead on points against Foreman in Jamaica. Young dominated this bout outside of the 7th round.

He lost the 7 th, but Foreman was pretty ineffective after landing a big shot , Young evaded most of Foreman’s punches, Foreman punched himself out and Young was coming on in the last 40 seconds of the round , the crowd cheering him on .

The referee was ridiculous in this fight! He knew he was on network television and he let the corner and Jimmy Young completely intimidate him. Gil Clancy was responsible for this loss. First, I think George won the fight. He had young badly hurt in the seventh round, he pursued him the entire fight and landed the harder punches. Jimmy would land a good right hand with speed and no power and Cosell would go crazy About how great a boxer Jimmy Young was. Foreman was killing young to the body. Clancy, had George box in this fight. It was a terrible strategy. Young had seven knockouts! George should have waited into him the way he did to Norton and destroyed him. Young had nothing to keep Foreman off him. But George stayed a distance, through jab after jab and got exhausted
