Brittany and Sugar were there because they were part of the group who were joking when they saw Coach Bieste's black eye (they didn't realize she was actually being hit by her husband). Their voices wouldn't really fit the intensity of this song.

If you want a bit of explanation about what happened in the episode and the conclusion of this story line, read below. *SPOILERS* At beginning of the episode, Coach Beiste is seen walking down a school hallway with a black eye (you can see a faded black eye in this clip) and the girls see it. Santana makes a "joke" about someone punching her to cause the black eye and the other girls laugh because they think something like that would never happen to Coach Bieste. Coach Roz overhears and gets onto the girls for joking about violence against women. Coach Roz and Sue decide to talk with Coach Bieste, but she continues to lie about hurting herself while working out. They tell the girls to do a performance about empowerment. The girls decide to perform 'Cell Block Tango'. Coach Bieste becomes upset during the performance and leaves. They confront her after and she reveals that her husband did cause the black eye. They convince Coach Bieste to leave and move in with her sister. The girls decide to have a more sincere performance - the one in this clip - after they learn the truth to show support for Coach Bieste. She does go back to her husband in the episode, but later realizes that she deserves better despite her insecurities and does not want to live in fear so she does permanently leave her husband.

Yes Coach Beiste was being abused by her boyfriend. Not sure why Brittany and Sugar didn’t sing in this but that trio sounded absolutely amazing together.

They didn't sing because it was an emotional number. Sugar can't sing and Brittany can carry a tune but she's one of the weaker vocalists on the show

@@alexsc3902 i never said she couldn't sing at all but she is very clearly a weaker vocalist than most of the glee club. Like that's very obvious and even Heather herself would agree since she was originally just supposed to be a choreograoher for the show. She got much better over time but most of the other cast could still outsing her and that's okay

I’m not sure why Britney didn’t sing, the other girl, I can’t remember her name, I don’t think she ever sings in the show but the three of them sound great and it was good to hear Tina sing

This was their second attempt at reaching Coach Biest. At first they did a rendition of "Cellblock Tango" which was an awesome performance but it was triggering to Coach. But we do get to see some of what she goes through at home. Again, great performances but deals with DV.
