Jimmy I don’t think they moved the house, they just dug the basement later on when they added water and sewer and heat they needed space underneath the house to work. They stayed away from the outside of the foundation so they didn’t under mine the original foundation. Being a stone mason and restoring a bunch of old structures I have seen hundreds of houses done that way . Thanks for sharing

Its really too bad that the previous owner cut down all those old trees. Some of them were probably as old as the original house. It's also worth noting that the trees surroundiung a house on a farm style propoerty are there for wind breaks to diminish the effect of high winds during heavy storms and winter months. Now that property is effectively unprotected. @Jimmy, I hope you have an opportunity to plant some new established trees around this house.

Agreed, and the sooner, the better. Trees grow slowly, so give them as much time as you can. This home renovation will drag on for years and years--don't wait until the end to plant the trees.

With all that land you should consider doing some flower rows! For our farm we till up a good 3 rows about 20 feet long and plant native wildflowers in them. They help a ton with the local fauna for both bugs and birds! Plus it's really pretty and nice to setup a lawn chair and enjoy the sun amongst a sea of flowers too.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I often say that a renovation is far more challenging than a new construction because as an owner you are divided between te desire to keep what is old and the obligation to keep your building standing. Laura knows something about it from what I’ve seen. I hope that Jimmy will find a nice name for this property and that he will not have any bad surprises (in French we say "falling on a bone" which seems perfectly appropriate in this case).

We bought a farm in West Virginia. The 1890s part of the farmhouse has similar construction to that of your new house. 1" thick tongue and groove planks that run vertically from sill to plate, and a layer of "Novelty Siding" running horizontally on the outside. "Plank Frame" construction, apparently popular across the northeast before building codes. 17 layers of newspaper were the insulation/wallpaper. The floor joists are 6" hand hewn beams. I need to crawl into the foundation space and run a support beam perpendicular to the joists. The floor is rather bouncy. Looking forward to your restoration/fixing up of your new property.
