“The biggest problem with restoring an old house like this is taking the gut punch and moving forward with the repairs.” Welcome to Episode #3 of the Graveyard House restoration where surprises hit me at every turn. The original structure is from 1793 and if you’ve been following along you know things are really taking a turn. In this episode I begin excavation: the deep dig that will be the repair of the foundation. As I work my way through I come to realize that the skeleton of the modern extension needs to be completely replaced! No holds barred, I hit it hard and of course more has revealed itself as one repair leads to the next: the renovation has begun.

If anyone else loves this vibe, I recommended Sampson Boat Co's video series on restoring the historic wooden sailing yacht, 'Tally Ho,' which is absolutely a series about building an incredible brand new huge boat in a place where there's already a huge boat that's over 100 years old, without ever going through a stage where there's no boat. Theseus be damned.

Man, you are doing it right Jimmy. The gravel looks like #57 in size. You never know what you're going to get when you start bringing these old houses back to life ... once you start peeling back the layers, you could run into absolutely anything ... no standards of construction until reletively recently. Good stuff, man, love it!

Listening to Jimmy talk about ladder safety brings back memories. Back in the 80's when I was still working as a journeyman painter on commercial and residential projects, we used what we referred to as a 4' painter's ladder. This was a lightweight wooden ladder with a rope or a thin chain holding the two sides together, and no locking mechanism. These ladders were built to be moved quickly and effortlessly as the painter would work his way around a room cutting in the uppers. You could hold on to your cut pot with one hand, pick the ladder up with the other, and the two sides would close allowing you to quickly and easily swing it over to your next move. But they eventually outlawed these ladders because carpenters, plumbers, laborers and other tradesmen on the job would use them for things other than what they were designed for, and hurt themselves in the process. This lightweight ladder was designed for someone using a two or three inch paint brush and not applying any amount of force or torque. But laborers would "borrow" them from us and use them to demo walls, and the ladders would slip shut and collapse on them. Anyway, our very convenient painter's ladders were eventually outlawed and replaced (for "safety" reasons) with OSHA approved boat anchors that weighed more than twice as much, and required two hands to open and close, making our jobs harder and more time consuming, but not any safer. Progress.

Good work Jimmy. There is nothing like taking a house back to bare it's bare bones and rebuilding it to something solid. I have done it here in the UK. Once finished, which will take a while and a lot of hard work, it is not only extremely satisfying, but also knowing that it will last solidly for many years means everything for those who care.

In Australia we dont wrap our timber frame dwellings in OSB, its typically 2x4 (90 x 35) studs @ 16"/450 crs, single bottom plate, 2/ top plates and then we use a moisture barrier wrap before either cladding in brick masonry or timber weather board (cladding).
