This is one of the best WC races ever! The early pace by Chesire, confused the Ethiopians. Kirui's injection of pace from midway, confounded everyone. He was a special talent. I rem how he ran in Kasarani to qualify for this final, the preps at Nyayo with his bro used to be brutal. Kirui had this massive stride, considering his height. Truly, I wasn't surprised when he won. Thx for posting this legendary race!

Although it looked like a tactical error to let Kirui go that far ahead, the WR at the time was 12:58 and this guy ran 13:02, one of the fastest all time back in 1993 and a World Jr. Record. Gebrselassie ran his PB in that race, an Ethiopian record at that time of 13:03.1, so it wasn't like they just let Kirui go … he was running faster than any of them had ever run. Amazing race.
@bharatmahaan29912 ай бұрын
Yes, a blistering final lap could have ensured 12.57, but Kirui had been running too hard throughout the race and he clocked around 59s.
This is a legendary race!!!! What a furious pace, just amazing. I love it when this happens, but unfortunately it is a rare thing. rare and well worth the wait

Always thought Gebrselassie could have won this if he hadn't felt obliged to sit behind the older Bayisa until the final 100m. He clearly had so much left in the tank and could have closed the gap down much earlier.

Bayisa is only 4 months older then Geb, so he didn't stay behind him because he was older. Bayisa had a lethal kick and defeated Geb several times in the early 90:s. After this race Geb never competed on 5000m in any championships again.
@stevefanner4 жыл бұрын
@@magnuslundberg9675 However small the age gap, seniority is a thing in Ethiopian running. Bayisa had won the bronze in the Olympics the year before and was their No.1 guy. If you watch the final lap it's obvious Gebrselassie was itching to go past him but held back.

Many have tried it; the difference is that a 60.21 second lap wasn't enough to break away mid race post 1993. For example when Hissou won in 99 he ran an early surging lap in 59.91; his opposition didn't even give him a metre.

I didn't see this race at the time, as U.S. tv coverage of this meet was abysmal. I just heard about it or saw short clips. It's amazing he could front-run like this, against someone like Skah who had already won the Olympic 10k and World XC titles, and Gebreselassie at the start of his GOAT career. When the kenyans run as a team it's very hard to beat them. Kirui was the perfect cross country runner with his stride, small size and agressive running style. He defeated Gebresselassie in world junior cross country championships in -91-92, and in the seniors -93 -95 -96 ( Did not participate -94) Kirui made this a cross country race on the track and used basically the same tactics when he won 5000m in Gothenburg -95.

Gebreslassie held back too much, watch him with 300m to go, he seems to be trying to secure silver, but his kick finish would have been quick enough to win, had he put in 100% with a lap to go. He should have gone sooner.
To be fair, the overall time wasn't that great; it was probably still pre-EPO use in distance running. Kirui actually pays for his sixty second lap. Whereas the difference with Gebrselassie in Zurich 2 years later is profound.
