On 20 March 2006 at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Craig Mottram came second in the 5000m event with a time of 12 minutes, 58.19 seconds, beaten narrowly by Kenyan runner Augustine Choge. This race was only the second time that this event was won in under 13 minutes at a championship competition (first one being 2003 World Athletics Championships.)

I love the way the Kenyans showed respect for Mottram. That alone lets you know you're a great runner.

It's not correct that the first championship sub-13 5000m was 2003 at the World Champs. The 1999 edition also was won in sub-13 (by Salah Hissou, in all 4 runners went under 13 in that race).
@imchamp4324

It's the commonwealth games nobody had broke 13 before And Bekele ran a 12:57 Olympic record in 2008 Eluid Kipchoge ran a 12:51-3 at 2003 with El G and Bekele right behind him so 6-7 all time have gone sub 13 in a championship but this was the first time at commonwealth games
