I started doing this because it keeps kids and adults from fighting. Everyone gets to decorate their own tree for their room. We have to reach consensus on the family tree. This really keeps my perfectionist tendencies in check. Everyone has a more relaxed holiday this way.

I used to work with a guy whose wife was obsessed with Christmas decorating, so he would take a week off every fall to help her decorate the house for Christmas. They had a fully-decorated, themed Christmas tree in every room (bathrooms and wine cellar included), a train set and model Victorian winter village that took up the entire dining room, and another room dedicated to a giant manger scene, surrounded by the whole damn town of Bethlehem! Then they'd host a dinner party every weekend from Halloween until about Groundhog's Day. Poor guy. Must've been exhausting.
