Paul McCartney said The Beatles were a "great" band, and they were so. That is because each of them brought different strengths to the band and they executed beautifully. Ringo once said that John played a song to challenge Ringo to play drums like what was heard on the song; Ringo said, "John, you DO realize that is more than one drummer playing, don't you?" John agreed but had confidence Ringo could do it. And Ringo DID do it! Ringo said that was the greatness of The Beatles, they were "always pushing the envelope."

Ringo and Paul were likely the closest band mates instrumentally because bass and drums have to form a tight bond to be successful. This is possibly one of the most overlooked aspects of the Beatles. Sure their harmonies were terrific and everyone likes to point that out. But listen closely to how in sync the drums and bass are in any one of their songs. And Ringo was an absolute artist on the drum, so much so that it meshed perfectly with the theme of the song and go somewhat unnoticed when compared with the vocals and guitar.

@@Thomas83KO Ringo Starr was left handed and played a right handed kit. This allowed for some of the most unique fills of the 60s and 70s. He was an unconventional drummer that combined aspects of jazz drumming (usage of swings) with rocker drumming. He was able to keep up a tempo with the other three by watching their footwork during their live shows because he couldn’t hear them over all the screaming girls. Listen to his drum work on songs like Come Together, Rain, and Ticket To Ride. He wasn’t flashy, he didn’t like drum solos. He didn’t need any of those to be one of the most unique drummers of the rock genre. Ringo was the beat in the Beatles.

First of all, he is a worldwide treasure. In an age where people are being nasty left and right, this guy is positivity personified. Second, the guy is 80 years old for crying out loud. I hope I'm one tenth as alive when I'm that age. Third, you know he's told those stories for 50 years (e.g., how "Octopus's Garden" was inspired -- "Pete's boat" indeed) but the stories are as fresh as if he just remembered them for the first time in years. BTW, I love that Jimmy is in awe but is a great kidder. It's like they were great friends there. They aren't friends in the normal sense. We all feel like we know Ringo (millions upon millions of us) and he his generous enough to feel like he knows you too. I'm a huge, huge fan of him as a human being and as an artist.

"Octopus' Garden" is a MAGNIFICENT song. Very underrated, and I love it so much! I actually start learning English playing Beatles songs like this one. Ringo is right, is super easy to play on the guitar, only a couple of notes. My children love the song too. I got emotional watching him talking about this one.

It's quite nice. I think he was selling the song short here just because of his humility, but there's more to it than just an octopus's garden under a sea. To me the song evokes the feeling of safety in your own little bubble with your buddies. That line "we would be warm below the storm" is really something. George Harrison said something about this in an interview too, he thought the song was quite nice for that reason, a possible further reading

Of course excepting the times around the breakup when it was Paul against the other three in court battling over management and money. Ringo once drove out to Paul's home to give him some papers regarding those court battles and Paul slammed the door in his face. There was quite a time when they were not on good terms. Ringo also had a very serious alcohol and cocaine problem in the 70's and 80's and was often rude and obnoxious in public settings. Hard to believe, as he is so deservedly beloved these days and just the nicest person. And remarkable that he is so well preserved after childhood illness and abusing his body so badly for such a lengthy period.
