My MIL was a fan of Nick Clooney and sent Christmas presents to George and his siblings when then were children. They always sent her handwritten thank you letters. (We assume they were required to do so, but it was a kind gesture nonetheless.) When she was in the hospital, close to death, Nick was there visiting a friend. Nick remembered her and came to visit her. It was a highlight of her life. They are a gracious family.

I was in the USN in 1972 and in England. My shipmates and I got into the wrong train car. We didn't notice that we were in first class without the proper tickets. The conductor took our tickets and saw we weren't supposed to be in first class. He stared at us and asked straight away if were French. When we told him we were American he paused and then said, "You can stay". God help us if we had been French! Evidently the Brits can keep a grudge. Great book. Will see the movie on Christmas day.

My memory of Clooney returning to my college as an alumni: My very pretty roommate got dolled up to try to connect with him. And she did a couple of commercials approved for, "aged" women. Something like "cross your heart bras, that lift and separate.". At that time big celebraties NEVER did commercials. It didnt become common until "Marky Mark" did underwear on Times Square. Following "David Beckham " wearing underwear on Tokyo billboards. Followed by Brad Pitt doing them "secretly" on Tokyo billboards. Scandalous! Yes, I am this old and this should not even be in my memory bank. 😮😂
