No studio audience is paid, in fact they wait in long lines to go for free though, and fans will sometimes get tickets through giveaways or try to go to a show bc they announce the schedule in advance. In New York people fly in from all over just to see their favorite artist perform outside the studio. Especially if the group hasn’t performed in the area before but still has a large online following. It’s not hard to imagine fans would turn out to support. This is obviously a group that inspires a following.

What's special about this group is that they have been designing all their own choreographies since they were 14. They now even design choreographies for other groups. They also don't have a specific music genre, they do a lot of jazz fusion and punk and more recently have been working with the Beastie Boys producer Money Mark for the western market. They are NOT an idol group. Some have even called them an art project since it's so difficult to define them.

I noticed that about them after stumbling across them on KZbin one day. They seem a lot less "souless"/manufactured like a lot of other K-Pop/J-Pop bands but could never put my finger on why.

@@RahmatTantular When I think of idol groups, I think of a musical group where selling the idols is more important than making good music. Also the title is play on words in Japanese, or rather a play on sounds. Tokyo Calling sounds like Tokyo Korin (descending on Tokyo), which works with the fact that they are clearly in a Godzilla set for the music video and they are playing the Kaiju and the Defense Force.

I met them in 2018, it was a small venue in Shibuya with maybe 200 audience members. They were so impressive in their performance even back then, I remember them really standing out from other groups. After the concert the groups were giving autographs and selling merch - Atarashii Gakkoo didn't have any staff with them, just the four members. They waved at me, shouting "haroo!" and I really liked them so I went over and bought a cd. I could only say "thank you" or such in Japanese, but I remember their bright energy. Seeing them become globally known is just amazing.

But one day KZbin suggested that I watch the Tokyo Calling music video, and after ignoring it for a few days, I watched, and... Oh my god. I was immediately hooked. After listening to the song dozen of times, I started listening to more of AG songs. They started to grow on me, even as someone who don't like pop music normally, and now I'm a huge fan of the band and most of their songs. I know of many, many others like me. I think Tokyo Calling is a kind of open door, that brings in a lot of new fans that would normally not have paid attention to AG or J-Pop otherwise.

So refreshing. I love their choreos. Unique and genuine and somehow they feel relatable and danceable while actually being really skilled and not that easy at all hahah. But that relatability, realness is there and that's a huge factor for me. And they're very imaginative and creative, with having a great attitude and a sort of philosophy/theme to them. It's just so awesome to see a group like this that isn't afraid to not do the usual basic dance choreos and pop songs, bordering on something straight from a strip club or something, but actually doing something genuine, skilled, and different choreos full of personality. Same goes for the music. It's all over the place, but always interesting and often not basic mainstream music. I just hope the worldwide fame won't change any of that in the future.

Talk about hitting their marks! That eight armed effect done to camera at 1:50 was FLAWLESS. Seeing them own the whole studio space, and adapt parts of the video to that space specifically, was cool too. They crafted a performance that played equally well to the television audience and the live audience, even though they'd be different experiences. This was a real jem of a performance.

Almost 400,000 views. That may not seem like a lot, but its more than what 90% of Jimmy's musical guest get. Clearly, they hit a chord with the American audience. America is ready for something different, and these young ladies providing that. Wait until they Google them, and they find out they are even better than this. Their talent, creativity, singing, dancing, and charisma is off the charts.

America is in a recession rn. and the current culture only wants to stay in their bubble 'comfort'. So I highly doubt that. They would most likely get big in Mexico because it has a more lucrative market for international acts that aren't plants. Mexico is where british, japanese, italian, russian and even Indie US acts that are ignored by us propoganda music industry go to get their big breaks.
