2 generators, one day, one nite. Well over one year. I custom blend usually same brand. Replaced fuel system and carbon cleaned exhaust. Replaced muffler. These honda 2000 gens run perfect! Syn blend up to 50/50. Toyotaco 2018 gets full syn. 38,000 miles. 0 0il usage with 2,000 to 3,000 mile oil changes. 250 miles per month in my retirement. Lol. Intake cleaned. Catch can installed. Flushed engine, and gas barrymans b12 gas clean. All fluids diff, trans case and trans changed. Greased drive shaft. Just got 22.4 mpg. 0 tail pipe soot now! Yes I kiss and pet it, but my machinist son will inherit a perfect truck! Lol

I have been looking for the oil filter on my 1951 chevy pickup for decades, still can not find it but I just do drain and fills every 500 miles and mess with parts guys LOL, oh yea 500 miles is over a year for that truck

I have a 2023 Tundra Limited that is as loaded as a Limited can be. I traded in my 2020 Tundra SR5 for this on in January of 2023. I have had Toyota do all the servicing, and there have been no major issues other than the recalls, and the seat bezel cracking on each side. I do not have most of the problems other complain of, such as wind noise, rattling, and all the others. I have loved my truck so far, and I hope this engine issue does not involve many truck after it is all settled. If it does affect my truck, I hope by the time it happens, they have a good fix for the problem. I currently have 20, 562 miles, and my truck seems to be a good one so far. Sounds like there are issues with other truck besides just the Tundras. Just found this channel, and I like it so far.

My 23 tundra is at 26k miles and I did 1k, 5k ... oci. I've only encountered one stall event and the truck managed to start up in a sec or two and everything was fine. Haven't done any oil testing but I do see some sparkles in the oil but not too concerned anymore since the recall was issued. Still a great truck and drives like a diesel and gets good mileage can't complain lol.

Majority of break-in wear is 20 microns or less, much smaller than the eye can see. It takes about 8-10k miles to fully breakin the engibe. Next time, cut the pleats, then squeeze the oil out using a vise. You will be able to see much more. BTW, I'm an engineer, started using Amsoil in 1989.

@scorpio_9810 cam lobes, chains, pumps, and cylinder rings. Frequent, early oil changes will speed up the process, and get to the point that wear metal rate reaches normal levels. Wear metals circulating in the oil will cause additional wear.

Jimmy, I have a 23 Tundra 4X4 Limited. I purchased it in March of 2023. I also change my own oil. I did it at 500 miles, then drove it 3000 miles in a week. I have had zero issues with my truck in 12K miles. I really like the oil filter hose connector. It makes changing the filter way less messy. As for the massive catastrophic engine failures, the last I heard it was less than 900 of 103,000 vehicles. That is less than 1%. I run Amsoil OE 0W-20 oil since I change it every 5000 miles. I like you bought multiple Toyota OE oil filters for it. They are actually cheaper than other filters, and Toyota will not be able to say issues was caused by a aftermarket oil filter. I hope it don’t, but if it does blow up, I’ll get a new short block under warranty and keep going. Your truck is the color I wanted when I bought mine, but I had 2 choices, black or none. I’m on my second Tundra, first was the 2007 SR5 that I drove 128,000 with the 5.7 liter engine, one water pump, tires, brakes, every feature worked when I traded for a 2016 1794 with the 5.7 engine, 148,000 now and same experience, one water pump, tires, brakes, change oil every 4-5 M miles and do all the major services in the manual, Great Trucks and agree most of the negative comments come from people that have never owned a Tundra.

I did my first oil change at 3500. After all the hoopla I changed the oil and filter again at 7500, cut the filter open and absolutely nothing. My 2023 Tundra is the best performing smoothest riding vehicle I have ever owned. I have owned 8 different Toyota trucks, every one of them has given me long service life with minimal maintenance. I have worked on all brands of vehicles in my life time. Toyota and Honda are so far ahead of everyone else, they are absolutely in a league of their own.

23 1794 edition 10k miles got it near columbus oh as a dealer demo trd lift dealer installed. Love mine only thing i noticed is an intermittent rough idle. Mine is right at the cut off on the recall . Either way i know toyota will take care of the customers so im not real concerned. They make great stuff and i will continue to buy it

Love the new Red Tundra Jimmy!! Super sharp! I want one now! What package did you get? I saw by the wheels, it's TRD wheels... but not sure you got the actual TRD ?? Love it! Great color / interior... and the great care you give it. I like to Oil change after first 500 miles, then another at 2,500 then every 5,000 for the life of the vehicle. I'm not a big believer is the oil filter saga on KZbin. I saw if you maintain your vehicle you will have no issues. My Mom and Dad had a 79 Monte Carlo with a 305 V8 and Turbo 200 automatic. I learned how to change oil on that car... every 5-6,000 miles and used the il l-fated orange frame filters. Never a problem. Well over 150,000 miles later, on regular Valvoline 10w-30 and an nice orange Fram filter (LOL), car ran like new, and body was in excellent shape (I washed and waxed it all the time and oiled the doors with motor oil every fall). Car lasted over 12 years and still looked great ... even living in Metro Detroit Salt! Trans failed at 110K. about 3 times life expectancy? LOL

toyota did a good job with the design of the oil containment flange by the filter by using a drain system you can attach a hose to. good ☘️ with the tundra jimmy ! I did the oil change on my new bronco at 982 miles 2.3 t. also a case of factory oil filter for my home stock pile.

A few years ago I bought the only new vehicle I have ever bought. I had the first oil change on my 2021 Chevy 2500 HD with the 6.6 gas done at 1000 miles. Dealer thought I was nuts. Oil and filter is the cheapest part of an engine!

I never said it was a myth, I do think thousands of people who don't own a Tundra are casting lots of shade online with tiny bits of information based on a video they saw. Right now the failure rate is .26% about 900 out of 400,000. But some on the internet would have you believe Tundras are littering the highways broken down.

Even Isky cams says not to use synthetic oil with flat tappet lifters,use break in oil first to break the camshaft in properly.Change the oil at 500 miles using break in oil and then your choice of oil with the second oil change.My dad found out,Isky puts a sheet of paper with information with their camshafts.He put one in a Chrysler 354 fireball Hemi

Any vehicle with open recalls is not usually accepted in trade in. Since it can't be resold until the open recall is done. Takata airbags, electrical issues and all kinds of issues can case recalls and there are dozens of makes and models of vehicles with recalls at this time.

We are in Kissimmee, Florida. The oil change on the Tundra is similar to the F150 and GM trucks, but the Tundra does hold 8 quarts of oil. I think the Ford and Chevy are 6 or 7 quarts from memory. Thanks very much.

Nice truck, best wishes. Toyota's known for its reliability & resolving its recalls promptly. Toyota has all the info, so wish there was a way to verify the numbers. If Toyota owners experience a problem, isn't it best to share the experience? No warm fuzzy feeling from the resolution getting pushed back. Toyota's silence just allows the rumor mill to turn. Toyota is quality, but I think they can do better handling this.

When you cut the filter open, you checked the outside pleats, but never showed us the inner pleats. Doesn't the oil flow from the center perforated tube outward?

The oil flows into the outside then up the center. This is why there is a tube in the center to avoid collapsing if the filter is neglected.

l have a first generation tundra change the oil every 5000 miles since it is the first GEN it’s on its second timing belt 280,000 miles on it now and tires and brakes, and one alternator, and one starter and a couple of coils is all that’s been put into this truck in 24 years not too bad i have the 4.7 liter v8

If you are noticing metal, it’s probably a little too late given the tolerances on those mains. Oil analysis will pickup bearing wear you won’t see.

Oil analysis always shows some metal, which lessens after break in then increases again towards the end of an engines life. Main bearing clearances of .0015 to .0025 can handle microscopic particles not visible to the eye. Bearing material is actually quite forgiving at these particle sizes, but the larger sizes cause the damage 900 or so truck experienced.

@@JimmyMakingitwork There are normal ranges of bearing material in the oil though. That's my point. I use blackstone labs for my personal trucks, but use Caterpillar for all the company trucks and heavy equipment. We don't can almost always tell when an engine is about to fail based on oil analysis and total fuel consumed. For example, with no red flags on oil analysis, a CAT C175-16 can go for 950,000 gallons of diesel before rebuild. If metals are higher than normal, it can fail a lot quicker. These new Tundra engines are failing with random mileage from 5k up to 60k from what I have seen. There's got to be excessive wear, but not enough to always see in a filter. That's why I would be doing the oil analysis. You might lose one at 60k miles, but not see visible metal until 55k. Then it's too late.

My 2022 was chaos !! It ate itself at 30k. Toyota superceded the pistons and the bearings part #s according to a well known toyoats tech. I will be sending my oil out to Blackstone for analysis before the warantee expires. Idk if my replaced short block has those newer parts or not. The only difference after the replaced block is a slight decrease in mpg and I mean slight...I wish toyota had replaced the whole engine also because who knows if bearing material made it up into the top of the engine or turbos...time will tell I guess.

Don't run engine for short period after cold start. If it has a vacuum hose for fuel return, make sure it's connected and in good shape. Fuel smell from exhaust or used oil are signs of cylinder wash.

I think your choice of Amsoil and Toyota filters is great, Amsoil is the best oil, I use Pennzoil platinum only because it is easy to get and is a very close 2nd, those 2 oils are the only true synthetic oils all the others are blends, Amsoil is a true synthetic because of the refining process it is 2nd to none, Pennzoil platinum is a full synthetic because it is not made from crude oil at all but natural gas, the best base oil out there, less carbon, less additives to do the same job, all the other synthetic oils are just on the border of being able to advertise it as a synthetic

Toyota is ok with it, as long as the oil used meets GF-6 ratings. But the engine I installed in my 62 C10 says to not use Synthetic the first 9k miles to complete break in properly first.

I like that big pipe cutter. I'll have to get one of those. I've got a 23 Tundra. I've been using full synthetic. The manual shows ILSAC GF-6A multigrade engine oil which is also in the back of the Mobil 1 synthetic that I have been using. Isn't this a full synthetic oil or does this std not specify synthetic?

In my manual it says synthetic blend. I would think it can use either, but want to stick with their recommendations the first 10,000 or so for sure.

if you have over 2,000 miles on it use Amsoil or Pennzoil platinum full synthetic, mobil 1 is at the bottom of the list as far as oil goes, and if you get over 100,000, go with a higher viscosity, your timing chain will be happy

I don’t regret it, my son drove mine and traded for one too. I think there are too many videos driving panic. There are legitimate concerns, but also a 60/60 drive train warranty and a .26% issue. I like the new Tacoma too!

The way oil flows in that engine. Metal may never make it to the filter. It hits the first bearing before anything else

Oil travels from the oil pan, thru the pump and directly into the filter, from there to the crankshaft and rod bearings, then up to the cams and turbos. Gravity brings the oil and anything in it back to the oil pan.

​@JimmyMakingitwork he's making the case that any shavings that were left behind will be trapped at the crank where the bearing oil hole is, it can't get past the crank because it is grinding into the crank. The clearances aren't enough to allow the debris through. That's why it (partially) blocks oil flow for a long period, then eventually fries the bearing. You would never see those pieces in the oil filter as they are blocked from circulating. They are too big. What you MIGHT see would be smaller pieces of metal as the bearings wear. Only an oil analysis would be able to detect slower bearing wear that would be out of spec. Cheers.

Good morning Sir Jimmy of making it work. Amen on the shock jocks of minimal knowledge. I to like to know the why or what was different. How long was the oil change interval on the so called defective engines. Can it be traced to one or a group of parts that were defective. Could it be full synthetic being used? Was there sludge in the engine? What type of fuel (grade and tier) was being used? Was any GDI services ever performed? Was the oil level checked often enough? Was there any oil loss between changes. Data is always the key. As always great video Jimmy. From a Jack of all trades, yet master of none!

JIMMY .. I have a 2023 Tundra my first oil change was at 1200 miles usually i replace it at 1000 miles . I've owned Toyota's for 45 years and occasionally purchased other brands.. I have 4 vehicle that i maintained . The FIRST oil change is VERY important to get the Micro filings out.. These NEW engines today with twin turbos are even more important for your first oil change .. Toyota sent me a recall that over a 100,000 engines maybe contaminated with machine fillings .. Toyota oil changes in the MANUEL shows at 10,000 miles interval .. I will NEVER change oil at that mileage my MAX is 5000 miles with full synthetic ultra pennzoil ..PERIOD ..MY vehicles get about 250,000 miles before i sale them and they still purr like a kitten...

the first oil change is the most important one 1,500 miles is about right, the owner manual will not tell you that but new parts will leave some metal just from rough edges of castings, the break in metal from the rings seating and sealers and gaskets that leave some contaminants

Great video. Thank you. The Toyota haters are not good at math, it appears. The failure rate on engines at the time the recall was issued in late May was 0.27%. 0.27% of the Tundra's in service at the time of the recall had engine failure of some type. That includes all years 22, 23, 24. Could more of them fail, sure they could. But, if you like the truck, you have a 99.7% chance you will have solid truck, so get it and enjoy it. I would like to know what the failure rate is on engines for GM, Ford, Ram, etc. Heck, for all we know, 0.27% is an acceptable rate. Toyota haters are gonna hate, and those who loved their 5.7 previous gen are going to always take shots at the turbo V6........until they go buy one themselves and feel that power.

Changed my 2024's oil & filter at 1500 miles. I saw no signs of visible metal debris. I just changed the oil only,( no filter)again at 5000k. I'm going with manufacturer"s recommendation of Mobil 1 full synthetic, as I have done for several Tundras now. This is my 6th Tundra. I've babied every one of them. I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed in the 2024. I miss the V8, and my 2019 TRD Pro. The new truck drives very nicely. I absolutely hate the fact that it's constantly beeping at me. The automatic braking, when backing into a parking spot has scared the crap out of me, many times. The turning radius is horrible, compared to my 2019, but not as bad as the dreaded 2005. I just miss the simplicity of my V8, and its reliability.

Sounds like a great plan! From what engineers are saying the new Turbo V6 has been tested well over a million miles. But the few that have had trouble are something to do with machining debris, the design is solid from what they tell me. We will know in another year or so.

Glad your engine looks healthy. However, it still doesn’t explain why some are granading. It’s mentioned 900 out of 103K went bad. Even though it sounds like minuscule number, you gotta wonder when buying a new Tundra…Am I the lucky one today OR will mine fail? Personally, I don’t like to gamble in this case. Whether or not its a leftover debris or a design flaw (time will tell), I am not taking chances. Especially, when the manufacturer acknowledged there is a problem. Hope you are the luck one.
