The FIRST thing I would do with any of these, is wash them. People think it's the last thing to do ... but wash it and not only do you stop grit getting into things when you move them, but you also see fresh leaks as they happen.

I have owned Cessna 310's for over 21 years. MY opinion is this airplane needs to be put back in the air. Of all the choices in light twins out there today, the 310 is the best choice. It is fast and comfortable plane to own and fly. It is expensive only if you choose the WRONG people to do the maintenance on it. There are a lot of good shops on airports that don't have high rent. They can do great work and not take you to the cleaners. People who take their airplanes to big airport maintenance have to be not concerned with cost. The most expensive and the poorest annual I have gotten in 21 years on my airplane was at a high rent big airport.

A lot of the expense of cessna twins twins comes from the increasing rarity and price of parts that need to be replaced. But cessna twins like the 320 and 310s really are about the best planes you can get without going to something like a king air.
@chucksdesk
@chucksdesk 2 жыл бұрын
@@RandomName841 Agree, but what I was aiming at is that the cost of labor and inspections like annuals can be twice+ the cost at shops on smaller "low rent" airports for the same service.

All too frequently, a long abandoned aircraft is a hugely expensive aircraft. Airworthiness directives, repairing corroded components and more take a toll. Think recovering a car from a pond after a decade or so, the body isn't rusted out, don't mean that the engine and drivetrain aren't rusted together as a solid block. Or that the shock mounts are corroded through... Still, I'd still go for it. Get a cooperative A&P type to inspect and train, at least until I could certify in A&P, go to town restoring.

Love it! I grew up watching Sky King on black and white TV in the 50s. His second aircraft was a Cessna 310B and his registration IIRC was N975B. I looked up your aircraft's registration number and it's registered to a John Novak in my native hometown of Pittsburgh PA. Cert issued in 1975. It shows it as a 1955 Cessna 310. Very cool! I left Pittsburgh in 1964 for college in Youngstown, drafted after graduation in 69 and wound up in Colorado thanks to Uncle Sam for the last 51 years. Quite a pathway for me, wondering about the pathway of your Cessna. I love General Aviation though I could never afford a license. A few friends take me up occasionally. I'm a volunteer for the last 14 years at our local aircraft museum and I love the airport atmosphere! Thanks for your rescue efforts on old aircraft. I always think you guys who do rescue work on any vehicle need to pack a leaf blower, a shop vac and a pressure washer! First things first, make'm look prettier! Can I correctly assume that there is an airport runway or a grass airstrip within taxi distance of these stored aircraft? 😉👍👍

Interestingly enough, this plane has a story prior to it's hangaring! Back in mid-January of 82', this 310 was on a dusk approach to snowy Butler PA's rwy 36 when the left main landing gear, left wing and left prop struck an automobile driving on the perimeter road. There was significant damage to both plane and car, but no injuries in either. Plane landed safely. FAA's findings were 1) dusk light conditions 2) mus-judged distance PIC and 3) misjudged altitude PIC. Very happy to hear all walked away unharmed and this O-470 powered 310 gets to fly again in a new millennium!

I enjoy your videos quite a bit. I wanted desperately to be a jet pilot but, fate saved me (or fucked me). I took my first flying lessons at 16. My parents were dead set against me doing so, so it was difficult to sneak to the airport for lessons. At 18 at college I took lessons in Piper Cubs and then Cessnas whenever I could come up with money, but working thru college left me little money. So I figured I would join the Air Force when I graduated. So when I graduated, they didn’t need pilots as the Vietnam War was ending. I had about 30 hours of private time. So I couldn’t figure on a path to my goal and instead, went to law school. Halfway thru, I read that the Air Force needed pilots, so I applied and they said at 28 I was too old. I eventually became a Palm Beach County Judge and I never finished my license so I fly vicariously through you and others on KZbin. The world is much safer with me flying a simulator.

There is no coincidence all of them stopped flying in the 80's. You sir, were in the presence of a legend and you didn't even notice. You can bet he didn't give his real name out on the papers LOL.

C310.....a real cool looking aero. I remember one in Liverpool England when I was a kid.....always looked great......love the nose wheel right at the front......so cool....it was a 1964 model. Hope you can save it Jimmy.

What amazes me most is that these machines sit for 30-40 years with rodents, birds and the elements at work and they STILL fire up and run. The engineering from this era was very much "overbuild" it when in doubt.

as a pilot, this is one of the most engaging vids I've ever seen. Not many have the balls to take the financial risks of buying unknowns. BUT if he can get it running good enough to get ferry permits he will quickly become a multi-millionaire (if not already one). As others have said, raising a kid this way bodes well for his future. Bravo Jimmy.

You got a good deal with the 310. I’ve been looking for a Cessna 310 myself, and it looks like you found the perfect one to work on, invest in, and bring back to life. 310 is absolutely the keeper. Working on restoring this one, would definitely be a video series, that I would absolutely watch!!!

You made me cry when you turned that engine over I rebuild a lot of vintage machinery. It you let oil sit even for 6 months let alone 37 years it looks perfect as all the partiiculates drop to the sum. It you run the with out changing oil and cleaning sump you have just sucked all the crap into you oil pump and pushed it through engine. Also all cams bearings above oil line will be bone dry. Damage damage. Open covers hand oil Frist I tell all my clients.😩

Great videos, Jimmy! I got my PPL in 1980, but ran out of money when I went to Graduate School. The only thing I fly now is an X-Plane Fight Simulator :-). Your videos have inspired me to get the plane you are working on and fly them on the simulator (A lot cheaper). I love my Cherokee 6 and now I have to get a 310. Good luck with your 310.

After 37 years, the pressure carbs are going to need to be IRAN’d at the very least. I figured it would be the easiest to start since it was stored indoors. Be sure to do a thorough corrosion inspection in the upper gear well under the augmenter tubes. Early 310s tend to have heavy corrosion in this area.

Yeah, those carbs were toast. Corrosion check is good. The major issue is the props. These are the AD’d ones :( got any very generous connections to some props for this bird?

@@therealjimmysworld Check with Aircraft Specialists on Clark Regional Airport (KJVY) in Sellersburg, IN. You might want to contact White Industries in Batesville, MO(outside KC) to see if they have any props that have the AD complied with. Preferred Air Parts has thousands of Cessna parts. You might want to check with them as well. Send me the model and hub numbers and I’ll have a friend( actually an old boss) see what he can find. I used to do a lot of AD compliance work with South Coast Propeller( wasn’t their name back then) in Bessemer, AL, especially two bladed Hartzell and McCauley props.

This is really cool. My dad was a private pilot. He soloed in 1974. We would rent Cessna 150's and fly locally. Then around 79 we joined a Beech Aero Club and flew Sundowers, and Sierras. My dad got upset because the owner of the club kept changing rules and adding charges. In 1980 he bought a brand new Cessana 172 . The longest trip I flew with him was from BWI to Gadsten Alabama and back to visit relatives. He ended up selling 4815G around 83 to a pilot in Texas. I wonder where she is now.

I have been a commercial pilots since 1970 and an Air Forced trained aircraft mechanic since 1968 with an A&P license. I would never consider flying that aircraft with out a complete tear down and inspection of both engines and props. Even if they were factory new when installed and has never been run. Also a complete annual inspection and repairs. Which would probably take at least a couple months.

Certificated airframe and power plant mech here, I am seriously jealous of that find. When I got my certificate in college, I worked on one of those! a 310R! Easily my favorite airplane in our hangar. It had been trashed by so many other students working on it. I had to do a mock annual on one of the engines that wouldnt start. Wound up being a timing issue. As soon as I set the timing correctly, she fired right up. Few things are more satisfying. Id love to have one, but a lot of the 310s out there that are active are pretty pricey, and old ones that need a lot of work usually require more money than they are worth to get airworthy again. Such a shame.

One of the coolest twin engine aircraft ever built. This one has a damage history from a landing accident in Jan of '82. The left wing and gear hit a car prior to touchdown. Looks like they did a good job on the repairs. She's a great find...
