Jimmy, regarding your Bonanza cylinder walls, they are channel chromed and look good from what I saw. What you saw as "crazing" is the normal, intended, chrome channeling, necessarily done for proper lubrication. Chromed cylinders are indicated by orange paint on the cylinder base or somewhere on the cylinder fins. The red paint was probably considered close enough to orange. Also, the fact that they are chromed, explains the absence of rust you mentioned at 22:49.

The AD on Bonanza wing spar carry-through structures applies only to 1957 H models and later, not to the C35 in question, so you should be good to go in that regard, barring unseen corrosion. Also, the E185 engine in C35s is rated at 205 HP. The electric prop is not subject to an AD, but removal and bearing lubrication is required at 200 hours IIRCC. That one has been upgraded with a solid state constant speed controller, an aftermarket modification available in the 1960s, as indicated by the dial for low-high rpm in addition to the toggle switch for prop pitch control. The aux tank behind the back seat could be either 10 or 20 gallons. The bladders Gor the main tanks might be OK, but will probably need replacement after sitting so long without fuel. Their longevity varies with the manufacturer, sometimes Uniroyal, Goodyear or a few others. BTW, on the later Bonanzas, the spar AD requires a visual inspection inside the cabin, sometimes a dye-penetrant or eddy current inspection, and allows cracks up to a certain length to be stop-drilled. Beech also offers a beef-up kit for the spar center section that can be installed if one fails the inspection. That AD is repetitive, requiring inspection every 500 hours (I think, may be 300 hours, don't recall offhand), but it doesn't apply to the C35. Good luck!
@peteranninos25062 жыл бұрын
, yah, it's 500. I believe it was a spar web, not the spar itself. As you said, a pretty easy fix. I was looking at a "straight 36" and that inspection scared me and I lost a sweet deal.

I've got the prettiest one I've ever seen at KLVK. {see the AOPA article by Barry Schiff on her at the bottom} Learn PROPERLY, don't cut ANY corners, keep that stick in your lap when it needs to STAY in your lap, lest that wing goes flying again before you are stopped... ...then come track me down. My dad and I both have '46 Champs here, and the beer fridges are full. Any primary trainee who learned in a Champ is welcome into my beer fridge anytime. Better than learning to drive a stick shift 3-on-the-Tree first. Maybe you can find someone to give me a Nosewheel Endorsement. ;-} You know why I chose a career in the MC-130P as a Flight Engineer? Put those 4 fans of Freedom in Reverse, and my Engineer seat sits atop what is now a TAILwheel. {Sure that's a stretch, but I have been a Champ fella since Carter was President and I had to sit on Phone Books to find the horizon, so I'll take my liberties where I may} You will never regret training in a Champ, Cub, T-Cart, Luscombe or Citabria. Took my PPL Check in a Citabria GCAA on a crosswind max component kinda afternoon at RHV, and a year later, I was on the other side of the Bay at NUQ in the Mighty Combat Shadow, clearing #3 Prop. Ah, the '152 C model Bonanza - my brother's 1st Bo, his had an E-225 engine (basically the same, just rated at higher HP). Our mechanic also has a C model, with the E-185 (currently apart/storage). Yeah, the electric prop gov was unusual. he had that thing for about 7 yrs, got it all dialed up, had the engine OH, brand-new STEC-30 A/P and Aspen panel installed, then sold it, got his '65 Debonair with the IO-520, just added tip tanks last year. I love the Citabria's! Although, the models I like have an electrical system and metal-spar/wings. I almost bought a restored 7-ECA (with factory metal replacement wings) a few years ago, but it was in VT at the time, in Jan, and every time I could get there to check it out it was like -20 degrees and 30 kt winds...So I missed it...LOL, great video!

Not a thing wrong with an electric prop. My '48 Bonanza had it and I had zero problems with it. The "V"block also has an AD note for replacement. I paid about $75 dollars for mine. I had the tubular spar in mine, and installed a spar kit. Yours is a built up aluminum., which is very strong! If the price is right, I'd get them both! I just loved my Bonanza, even though my E-185, was just the takeoff power, and 165 hp was the real hp. Wish I still had mine, had to sell it for a down payment for a house (after I got married). Should have kept the Bonanza! Bob

If the engine runs on the champ and compression is good on it, and the fabric is good. 15-20k. On the C-35 Bonanza, it has No ADSB. Might need new bladders. The prop bearings need checked. 24-27k with a good gear swing and good compression.. the big if is the powder you found on the ruddervadors . That corrosion is what killed my C-35. I loved my light C-35.

Bananas are fun, and fast. If you are sitting in the back they wag you to sleep. Just have to always make sure the ruddervators are properly balanced. Even mud daubers can put them out of balance if they make enough nests inside. You can close most of the openings with speed tape. The Champ looks awesome. If nothing major is broken, and the spar is in good shape, they are the ultimate low speed flying fun. Leave the door in the hanger, and go chase coyotes, or fly the river.

Jimmy,....love your channel! Good news.....there are zero AD's on the Beech electric prop. There are inspections and 250hr. lubes. Buy both planes!!!!!

So glad you're doing up a Beechcraft Bonanza! When you had to scrap the barn find (more field fiend) one I almost cried! One of my favourite planes! Love your show Jimmy!

We owned a K35 for a few years. 150knots on 12gph. Oh and it had tip tanks for 8 hour endurance with a gross weight increase! I miss that bird!

A champ would be such a cool old plane to own. I have a radio Control model champ and would like to have the full size version!! I can't wait to see it running!

To buy to sell? I think the Aeronca has the best chance.. The DrKiller...Might be worth $50G? (in annual) BUT A huge gamble. So, $20G for the pair.. I think they are of equal value at this point .. The Beech has more total value ready to fly, but you gotta get it there... total value of both in annual? $70-80G? (right buyer, right time)

Maybe $10k-$15k for both. Closer to $10k. I flew a V35 for years and that prop, parts and engine is gonna be expensive. Spar could be a deal breaker and requires seats, etc to be removed to inspect plus balancing those ruddervators. The V35 is by far my favorite Bonanza so for the right money $7k-ish and a clean spar inspection I'd say go for it
@mehrschwein73782 жыл бұрын
even broken planes dont go for that little anymore. flying and buying planes got so much more expensive in the last years.
@jaysen1922 жыл бұрын
@@mehrschwein7378 unless you want to go bankrupt or lose a significant amount of money you just walk away then. Don't let the seller dictate the price considering you're the one with the investment ahead of you they chose not to pursue. Treat it as a business. It's not economically feasible because you also need avionics, ADS-B, annual, engine, prop, tires, brakes, rigging and a ton of other miscellaneous expensive things. You'll have $30-$40k into that airplane besides the purchase price for a $25k-$30k airplane realistically. I've been down this path with a K35 that had close to $85k in it then....an engine/prop overhaul for another $27k. Beautiful airplane I loved but poor financial decision.

@@jaysen192 so you're saying that Jimmy has no clue with his estimates on the bonanza? Remember, he didn't say why they haven't been flown. Likely were both good airplanes that have just sat after someone passed away. I'll bet money the deal is already done. This is just the first of many videos on these.
@benjigault90432 жыл бұрын
the ruddervators and prop alone off that v tail are worth 10k by themselves all day, even in the condition they are in now. An UN-airworthy disassembled c model 1952 just sold for 15k... The price of airplanes is insane right now.... If you got this c model for 7 k, that would be a miracle...
@benjigault90432 жыл бұрын
@@jaysen192 also nice e series (47-56) sell for 50k all day long as well... you're guess was about half the price on an overhaul as well... prices have about doubled since you have been in the game...
@lostinasia252 жыл бұрын
That fact it's your money not mine makes it an easy decision. The Champ probably 8000 usd and the Bonanza is clean but not much in resale value, so maybe 11,500 usd if all have logbooks. Wing Spar the great unknown without a pre purchase inspection. Still think saving the 310 was a waste of money. The Aztec would be a better return on investment.
@mnewb12 жыл бұрын
Completely agree, but offering what they are really worth would probably get you looks of derision. Especially in the last couple years, people seem to thinks airplane like this are worth quadruple what they really are
@jamesharkness10582 жыл бұрын
I agree....Aztec is a better airplane

Certain aircraft have timeless lines, that beech is one, P-51 and F-4 are a couple of others. Start a go fund me, you would be surprised at what we are willing to watch you repair. As a mechanic, I love this channel.

When I was a young child I had a plastic toy beech bonanza, v-tail! It was red on top and white on the bottom! One of my favorite toys! And when I was about 13 we were out at the airport and there was an aeronca champ setting on tarmac, in like New condition for $595 ! Dark green as I remember!

It would take a good annual inspection to determine what those two planes are worth. (At least they aren't covered in poop.) I would consider if the owner has to pay hangar rent or are the planes not costing him anything to sit there. Does he still have a pilot's license or are the planes useless to him, which would explain why they have been sitting. On the Champion, I want you to take the wing inspection covers down and look at the condition of the spars. Pay particular attention to the rear spar. The ribs are attached with tabs. I found a Citabria with broken tabs (from doing aerobatics) and the rib was sawing into the spar since there was movement when I lifted up and pushed down on the inboard end of the aileron. We opted for new wings with metal spars. Check today's pricing on that. You buy them all covered and ready to install from the factory. They will want a piece of the inboard spars sent back to them for proof they would not be reused. Old fuel bladders sometimes crack on the top surface first. If they are let sit less than full for a long time they dry out there. You will be the first to know if you top off the tanks with fuel.
