At the 2003 Edinburgh Tattoo there was a notable gap in the initial parade of the masses pipes and drums of about 10 soldiers. The MC pointed out the gap to the crowds , and then said ‘ but they flew in today from Iraq , please welcome the Black Watch.’ .. they marched in playing the pipes all dressed in desert fatigues.. there wasn’t a dry eye in the place....

Best pipeband in the world has to be either Field Marshall Montgomery, or Inveraray and District. Army pipebands are good dont get me wrong. But the chance with them winning any competition with the tunes the pipers play, and the beats the drummers play along with, the chance is very small

Civilian pipe band snare drummer here. The 3rd Battalion Scots Guards pipe band came over to compete in a grade 3 contest in Virginia in 2017, and came dead last in a field of 6. Military players are soldiers first, musicians second. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that! But there are many civilian bands that are much better musicians.
