Timely video Jim. First time in 15 yrs I took my vehicle to an oil change place a few months ago. They stripped out the aluminum pan threads. Pan looks just like in the video. They repaired it with a heil coil, so tight, unbelievable ! Bet they used an impact wrench for everything ! I did the oil change myself this past weekend. Have a temp rubber - toggle plug in there now. Looked on YT for fixes. Just got in a plug fix kit. That's for another day. Thanks for your videos.

Reasons I generally don't trust a shop to do my oil. Margins are so low on oil changes in most places that oftentimes corners are cut left and right to try and save money. Also doing your own oil lets you have a little more control over what goes in your car. For the same price as a shop, I can put high quality full synthetic and a high quality filter in as opposed to basic synthetic and the cheapest off-brand filter they could buy that week.

Matthew Blackwell True...couldn't believe the filter they used, about 2" long. The ones I use are about 5" long of course...geezz...

Great video Jim. I like to prefill the oil filter. And remember to check for leaks.

Great video thanks for sharing. Jim I an oil filter wreanch. It looks like a big set of channel lock pliers. I gave one to my brother. I bought them at big lots store. My brother has been working on cars for forty years. He say the pliers are the best oil filter wreanch he has ever had. It's easy to use. I just thought I throw that in. In case you have never seen those. Thanks for sharing your video. Thumbs up.

Jim, it is easier if your pour the oil from the container sideways. This makes the oil flow smoothly, not in waves.

That car was perfect for the demonstration. The drain and filter both in frame. You did that on purpose didn't you. :)

What i learned in school about tightening an oil filter is different. They told us screw the filter until it just comes into contact with the housing then turn it 3/4 of a turn.

jim just wondering do you prefer one oil filter over another? also whats your feeling on extended oil changes?
@jimthecarguy7 жыл бұрын
beach bum good question I use Napa filter at my shop. As for extended oil change. I don't recommend that 5,000 miles is the maximum. On my own cars its 3,000 miles

what do you think of pre feeling the oil filter with oil
@djr34857 жыл бұрын
You can pre oil the filter to avoid any potential oil starvation upon start up but it depends on the style of filter and its orientation on the vehicle. Many filters nowadays are vertically installed downwards or cartridge type making this difficult if not impossible. I suppose whilst it might be best practice it is certainly not essential.

if the band wrench is turned the wrong way it could crush the oil filter

Wish I had a lift! Right now I'm doing topside changes since my oil filter is on top.
