Watching these classic commercials is truly a breath of fresh air. Even though I watch nothing but the classic tv shows on METV & COZI TV the only commercials they show are defense attorneys, seeing if you qualify for Medicare, Medicaid or Life Insurance. I get so depressed seeing those same old lousy current ads to where I wish that I could replace the current ones with all of these classics, to make my classic tv watching nothing but fun & enjoyment.

Sounds like The Limeliters doing that "Things Go Better with Coke" jingle. Years later, that furniture mover guy in that ad had a recurring role on Murder She Wrote as one of Angela's old schoolmates. The very next ad features the British pop group The Fortunes. The Pepsi "For Those Who Think Young" jingle was by Joanie Sommers.

In the Polaroid Swinger ad, you get 2 for 1 on celebrities: Ali McGraw is the spokesmodel with the camera, and the jingle is sung by its composer, Barry Manilow.

I agree with something like "Where's the Beef" not being included. A "catchphrase" or "slogan" is NOT a "jingle". A "jingle" is by default, "musical". A "catchphrase" CAN come from a "jingle" but THAT is only a side effect.

I was around 7 years old & I so loved (get this) the “Budweiser Clydesdales”. I recall waiting, with bated breath, to see ‘em in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! I’d sing the accompanying jingle while playing goalie & waiting for the play to return to our zone. I played youth ice hockey (like I said, I was about 7 yrs.)! Aahh… good times! Now I worry ‘bout my health insurance, how to fit exercise into my schedule, when the market deliveries are due… such dreary nonsense. Bleh! But the “Budweiser Clydesdales”? Brings back those happy, hopeful, innocent feelings. Thanks for the post! 👍

11:35 - As I remember, this Budweiser commercial with the Clydesdales pulling the wagon was included in the film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" when Richard Dreyfuss gradually became obsessed with making models of the mountain where the aliens were going to land. I agree with leaving out things like "Where's the Beef?" - Not that there is anything wrong with those ads, Just that "catchphrases" are not the same as "jingles". I have seen people confuse the two things in compilations before.

12:13 I'm guessing that Oscar Mayer jingle (coupled with the relatively primitive visual effects) is one of the oldest (50's) jingles in this video... Reminds me of a very early Charlie Brown (Peanuts) cartoon.

Years ago I found a 16mm reel with many commercials on it. I thought that they would have been on 35mm, but after I thought about it, 16mm was probably more than enough for the low resolution of TV back then.

8:02 Farrah Fawcett & Joe Namath!! (Noxzema shaving cream ad) Namath is still milking that Super Bowl win from about 50 years ago to do other ads these days. ;) Sort of like William Shatner milking his Star Trek days to also do ads now, with his aging face shown up close on the screen(!)

These cig ads--I don't know whether to mock them (as a non-smoker), or just be depressed by them. I remember while I was growing up, my mother smoked Kent cigarettes (9:20; probably changed brands at some point). She smoked for 30 or so years, from around the time she & my father got married ('61) till the early-mid 90s. She managed to live about another 25 years after quitting (lived into her mid-70s), but her last 2-3 years weren't good ones--various smoking-related illnesses, including COPD, and needing an oxygen tube to breathe. (She would have turned 78 today, the day I'm writing this.) At least she was a lot better off than my paternal grandfather, who smoked a lot and died of lung cancer at only 46 (before I was born). Cautionary tale(s), I guess.

Lots to say about these commercials. You picked great nostalgia. Now I remember why they banned the ones pushing the romanticizing of cigarettes, that would eventually take and destroy soooo many lives. I know it was time consuming to pick the right ones. Thank you, Fred.

📺 Being a 70's kid, I would remember the ones from the '70s. 10:26 One shocking thing I've heard about this Meow Mix commercial: That cat was choking! But, rest assured, he was all right. 11:31 This Budwiser commercial must've been the one that appeared on Close Encounters of the Third Kind. On a TV, of course. 📺

Weird bit: I grew up watching McDonald's ads on TV as a kid....Did not actually go to a McDonalds until I was well in to my 20's!, Beyond the TV ads, I have ZERO childhood memories of McDonald's. There was a Burger King and (local chain) Winky's close by, SO Mc Donald's would have been redundant for us. I also was in my 40s!!!! Before I bought ANYTHING at a Walmart. (Being a one time KMart employee MIGHT have had SOMETHING to do with that.)
