You catch was close but not full. It's related to Eve's temptation in Eden. The Green Serpent is a common Russian metaphor for an alcohol and/or for a tempting by an alcohol. Being bitten by Green Serpent means being addicted to an alcohol. Serpent - as a symbol of temptation (like Serpent which tempted Eve in Eden). Green - because centuries ago common alcohol drink in slavic lands was called "green wine". It wasn't made from grapes actually, it was made from cereals and grasses. But whatever.
