The Hellfest show is one of my favorites no crowd present but 50 something minutes of a majority of my favorite Jinjer songs.Would still like Retrospection OMV and live Melbourne but anything by them will do

The Hellfest live versions always comes off depressing to me. The band probably wanted a crowd and just the COVID vibe in general.

I like the Hellfest show as well. It has that Pink Floyd live in Pompeii vibe. People have no clue how hard it is for a band to play to essentially no one and this band did that without compromise. And that's why you see them climbing up the list on these festival flyers. They don't fuck around

Eugene's playthrough for this almost had me go out & spend money I don't really have on a decent 5-string (something I've managed to avoid for ~30yrs of bass playing!) It's such a drop-A 5-string #MasterClass.... the slides, the casually fingernail-raked chordals, even a little slap&pop where few others would think to place it. Tremendous stuff. :)

Excellent choice and love the triple feature idea. "Vortex" is probably my favourite Jinjer song, along with "Sit Stay Roll Over" (even though they are very different) and "Sleep of the Righteous". Vortex is so proggy, so feather-light, so heavy, so beautiful and so brutal. And yeah, the intro drums are just ridiculously amazing.

Regarding the vocal dynamics, IMO it is because in the studio they are cutting between growled and clean lines. And because Tatiana clearly shifts her headspace, drawing on different aspects of her personality and feelings to embody the different emotions portrayed in different parts of the vocal composition, which is a huge part of why they feel so intense. So you get the feeling of split personality because she's consciously pulling up those different feelings in rapid succession to replicate what was just cut together in the studio. For example, watch her face go dark after the line in Pisces live session "meet me flashing when winter cries" as she prepares to savagely attack the microphone - seriously, I was repeatedly surprised the first few dozen times I watched that video that the mic was intact at the end and she had not, in fact, gnawed it apart. Another one with some great live playthroughs and a one-take vocal but where I don't recommend the concert video if you are focusing on instruments because the mix is a bit off with Eugene in particular being uncharacteristically low in the mix is Judgement & Punishment and you can really see her getting into character for her growls at one point in the vocal one-take video. The musical composition is fire but the official video is so distracting you might actually like doing the no-video version.

The most progressive track, for me, is I Speak Astronomy. It's also my favourite. An epic 6 minutes, four time signatures and false ending. The video is also great.

That's what I said before - in most cases the band is more intertaining live. They are able to produce the sound quality equal or even better than the studio recording. And additionaly they have Tatiana who is the world class live performer. Her stage presence lifts the performance to another level. She is a great live singer and she's a brilliant stage artist at the same time - ideal and rare combination.

btw, i think iknow why the vocals are better live (not every time, but when she nails them, they are).... she is a procrastinator.... she literally writes lyrics sometimes just days before recording.... so the recording is the very early stage of those vocals.... once she practices them through 20 shows or so, of course they are better than her getting off the couch to write and record them

Interesting idea :) Considering the fact that sometimes Tatiana create her lyrics just a dozen of minutes right before the recording :) Probably when they record vocals they don't really know how it should be. They invent it in the studio in a realtime and it's not polished yet at the studio version. I mean Tatiana doesn't sure yet what she wants here and there until she tries it ten times more.

Hmm... with the dynamism and duality between the vocal styles, live vs. studio, I think maybe what you're struggling to put your finger on is that in the studio version, they're clearly recorded separately, and even overlap. She'll still be holding the end of the clean note while the scream starts, so rather than 'back and forth', they sort of more flow into each other as opposed to the more jarring back-and-forth live. Given the song and its meaning and themes, I think the studio version is more what was intended, but this was definitely a good live vocal performance for sure! I was "there" when it streamed, live, with tickets, and it... honestly, the whole concert was really bizarre-feeling. A lot of what's awesome about live performances is the interplay and transfer of energy between the band and the crowd as they play off of each other, building a much bigger, very different energy. During most of this concert, that was awkwardly, almost _painfully_ absent. The band clearly worked hard to bring as much energy as they could to the stage, but it often fell short of a true live performance like Kyiv or Melbourne... and the monologues in between songs were suuuuper awkward and cringe for me most of the time. Not to mention, hearing a banger from Jinjer end to _literal crickets_ instead of the roar of a crowd losing its mind, is just wrong on _so_ many levels. :\ Jinjer is an amazing band live, but they're not magic. There are some absolutely unbelievable live performances (generally people will point you to the best ones), but there are also some absolute faceplants, often in the same concert. Melbourne and Kyiv were both concerts where the whole thing was fire... but Wacken Open Air has the quintessential version of Perennial, and the most godawful rendition of Pisces I think they ever did. (I suspect her monitors went out, and she wound up way off key with a look of intense concentration and mild distress, while holding her monitors and squinting at the audio booth). I think probably their hardest song, live, is "I Speak Astronomy". From a vocalist's perspective, that song is beast mode, and it shows, with only one pretty decent live version I've heard, and four or five where she gets up to like, two and a half steps flat, or completely bombs the highest notes at the end. Which... honestly? I like. It means it's really, genuinely live, and when they nail it, like this one, you know it's the real thing.

The music is dynamic and so is Tati, I think thats why they work so well...ever notice there are never solos...they're not really needed. Also, Ive thought about who Tati reminds me of, if anybody, and the closest I can compare would maybe be Mike Patton. The whole band is so good.

NICE!!!... please do homeback... and if you do any guitar playthroughs, try a plus or a minus and words of wisdom or captain clock.... and for these 3 SPECIFICALLY play throughs because i'll be honest, the songs kind of suffer from the vocals, not as good as tatiana became later

I think the main problem that people have with Tati is yhat she is legitimately really HOT! So you get distracted by that. And in order to Un-Distract yourself from that, you have to listen to the reat of the band. And then you get distracted by how good they are. So then you go nack to Tati! But when you come back to her you LISTEN to hiw good she is. And combined with how good the rat if the band is you realize that they are badass. But it takes, for ever person, varying perioda of time to recognize that. They are a legitimately a really good band. Badass Band. And they get better every album. Its fucking...... awesome!

I think I disagree about the similarity to Clay. Clay was a drum corps boy, and it shows. He uses lots of rudiments in his playing, often sounding like a drum line in miniature (in a good way). Vlad plays the drums like a piano, very musical and flowing, with lots of ghost notes and ridiculous dynamic control. It winds up sounding similar in that there are a lot of notes from them both, encapsulated within a slower groove feel much of the time. But to me the overall sound is _very_ different. I mean like... not even similar genres "different", with Clay doing mostly hip-hop beats blended with a little metal and rudimentified, and Vlad doing mostly jazz beats, blended with a lot more metal and djent. Actually, if I had to compare him to other drummers, I'd say something like... if Bernard Purdy and Jeff Porcaro had a love child who decided to go into metal... that's Vlad.
