The Maestro performance is genuinely interesting. It has to walk that Doctor Who line, it can't be inherently terrifying because there are kids in the audience, but it needs to be at least unnerving. Maestro initially appears to be massively over the top, but the longer you watch, the more obvious it is that it's a 'performance'. So it slides across the line of suspended disbelief. And then you realize that if you genuinely met someone like that in reality - THAT would be terrifying. That would be a genuinely unhinged way for someone to act.

More likely RTD is just building in gaps for future Big Finish / Multi Doctor / tie in novels or comics / cartoons to fill in - instead of trying to cram everything into the gap between Waters of Mars & End of Time like with Tennants first run - or ending up like Eccleston's only Season where there are no good / obvious gaps for future writers of spin off media to play around in due to how tight the continuity is between episodes - there's basically a gap between The Doctor Dances & Boom Town, so after Jack joins, but fitting in extra stories involving just the Doctor and Rose is tough without heavy handwaving.

I feel like there is something important in how Maestro knows they have an audience and is performing for that audience, is summoned by music but wants to destroy it, demands attention but ultimately wants solitude. Maybe everything set in motion when The Doctor invoked magic at the edge of the universe has more of an idea of their place in the narrative as characters. And while the musical number was a bit out of character for the series, it kinda makes sense. With the Toymaker's arrival, the rules of reality are being broken. For instance, when 15 duplicated 14's Tardis, its was the residual energys for the toymaker( and one could say the bi-generation itself was a result of that). With the defeat of The Maestro, the residual musical energy was still around, which is why everyone was dancing and singing. at least that's my headcannon.

Well, all the artforms are externalizations of inner emotional need. As Paula said, a catharsis, as is autistic stimming. The artforms that we have are accepted and long encultured languages. Of course, when artists have stepped out of the accepted forms, we have anything from mild controversy to outright hostility and anger - as happened with the impressionists back in the late 1800s who faced harsh opposition from the conventional art community in France and as with Jazz with it's improvision over traditional structure which was seen as barbaric and immoral. King George V was known to swear at flappers if he saw these young women and believed them to be a threat to the moral fibre of the nation. Margot Asquith, the wife of Prime Minister, Herbert Asquith, described him as a “dunderhead.” - a lunkhead or a dunce! I'm not immune to a bit of improvisation whilst doing the chores - sometimes around the tune of Grace's rabbit! It's a way to start the day. Mr Toaster sings along.

I suspect the 4th wall breaks are more than a gimmick. The Pantheon can rewrite reality, and given that the two we’ve met so far - The Toymaker and The Maestro - are tied directly to the concepts of artifice & performance, I suspect that The Doctor & Ruby are trapped in a kind of cosmic Truman Show. It may even turn out that Ruby isn’t “real,” but just a character made up by the big bad (The One Who Waits) for this cosmic production. Also, The One Who Waits is Susan. And The Doctor is an orphan from The Pantheon. Just my guesses.

I enjoyed this episode - apart from the musical number ending. Nice nods to the past, and Maestro is a villain of the time - if they were on 60s Batman, they'd fit right in. You might find some familiar tropes...

I will say this for RTD - pretty much every Who episode he's had a hand in, there's (just about always) a memorable concept, character and/or villain, unlike some showrunners where I'm looking at their series and can barely remember what happened in half their stories. Space Babies was a very weird concept, but I actually quite enjoyed it (despite me really not liking the episode it reminded me of, the one featuring the Adipose), and I'll definitely remember it in Doctor Who's history. Same for this one - I'll remember it for Maestro and some excellent musical nods, and gloss over the musical number at the end. I just presumed they'd finished editing and realised they were a few minutes short at the end of the episode. Next time they're short, they could do a filler like 'The Adventures of Ned Flanders', except it'd be, oh let's say, 'The Adventures of Cherry Sunday'.

Analysis after the show was fun. A lot of funny quips and singing as usual. 👍👍

I wish Disney had coughed up some royalty money for the Beatles songs and The Twist... damn dinosaur budget blowing out

I’m reminded of that Monte Python skit whet the characters were like “what’s that” and another would say “that’s the incidental music of the scene!” I guess they’re going back and forth between the types of music. The worst is probably when Maestro looks at the audience and starts playing the theme music. And it’s odd that he referred to diegetic music as if he knows he’s in a fictional world. It’s doubly weird because very recently I saw a ranking of various Doctors ability to break the 4th wall. I guess that video is going to require an update at some point. 😂

prediction: Ruby is the final boss. Ruby is not real. Perhaps an object was left with her?
