Salaam, what's interesting is that history tells us that when the Muslims of Spain encountered the Europeans they found them drowned in superstition to explain the ailments and calamities associated with health and social disorder and the Muslims through the scientific method and reason were able to make advancements in science,medicine, and philosophy that the Europeans benefited from, it's interesting how the tables have seemed to turn. However, I believe that Mufti Abu Layth needed to lay out from his perspective and studies what is possible and true of the unseen world, the Muslim thinkers and philosophers of the past generally could strike a balance between "faith", reason, and science, it seems as if Mufti Abu Layth is discounting the reality of the nature and occurrences of the unseen world. From this lecture I take that the modern western scientific and psychological explanations of phenomena have explained or rationalized to the human psyche everything in the unseen world and so would that discount the nature of what Muslims attribute to the unseen? Granted there exists misinformation and cultural baggage that gets brought into the Muslims understanding of what's spiritual and unseen, and this is what the Mufti is addressing, but just because there are modern ideas and theories that seem to explain what our predecessors attributed simply to the unseen in some cases, does that make them, our predecessors wrong or is the western perspective detecting what's occurring in the unseen world through scientific and psychological clinical explanations and rationale devoid of a revelatory background to reference? Because one group's world view is based around traditionally religion/revelation, science, and reason, and the other purely on science and reason without revelation. Where does the place of our revelation and faith stand in the light of modern explanations of phenomena when the Muslim thinkers, philosophers, and scholars traditionally united it with reason and the scientific method, does it seemingly get discounted, minimized, ridiculed, or "rationalized" away? What's the balance and parameters?
