I don't know for sure.. but it's hinted that emperor knew the truth but wanted to kept as secret because imperial brother is given higher priority and he wanted jinshi to be crowned next. But this changed when gyokuyou's 2nd child (son) was born, Jinshi supported gyokuyou and declared that he isn't interested to become emperor.

If I remember correctly Jinshi is the current crown prince regardless if he is Emperor's brother or son because he still the first in line and the only candidate left. That's why he make bet with the Emperor and taking care of inner court so that he can push the crown prince title to others. Jinshi choose to side with Gyokuyou so that he don't have to fight for the throne and put MaoMao (who Jinshi's employee) against Gyokuyou. The Emperor still want Jinshi to became the crown prince because he promised Ah Duo to make her his empress when they are little.

Spoilers - Plus if Jinshi becomes next in line he will have to keep a Heram. Something that he hates and Maomao will never married him. By branded himself with Lady Gyokuyou’s emblem he insures that he can’t take the throne or have any doctor see his body. If people do find out about the brand it can start rumors. Such as Lady Gyokuyou had it done to him, or they are lovers. Thus jinshi did this with only 4 witnesses the emperor, Lady Gyokuyou, jinshi and Maomao. Since Maomao is a witness and is apothecary. She is the only the allowed to see Jinshi without his clothes. She also makes her the perfect wife for Jinshi.

I admit I was pretty confused at first, but of course I later started reading the manga before they revealed his real age in the anime. But it seems like Jinshi knows that the current emperor is his father and Ah-Dou is his birth mother. But I think since he doesn't want to be in line to take over the throne, he doesn't care either way. And that's just my opinion. Especially when I found out in the novel he made it so he couldn't be next in line. Plus, its obvious about his feelings for Maomao and I think deep down he knows if he did become emperor, it'd be impossible to be with her.

I am glad that JInshi isn't aiming for the royal power, since it honestly seems more trouble than it's worth. So many stories like this simply say 'they wanted the crown" but can't really explain why all the death, intrigue, murder and loss of freedom/privacy is worth it. I had a hunch that Jinshi is actually knew that lady Aa Duo is his mom, it's actually quite clear especially by his uncanny resemblance to her.. but he has a love-hate relationship with the Emperor because he knew he is his father but his real parents don't explain it at all, you know it's a complicated relationship.. and I'm agreed that the Emperor wants to make him the crown prince. But as you know he is reluctant to be one.. and,.. placing Jinshi as someone responsible for the harem is actually a win win solution.. because, he can hide his identity and it can protect him from the attempts of assassinations.. as we know, that in the next volumes of the manga whenever he is in duty as a royal he get assassinations attempts😢 quite often so yeah, I hope Jinshi and mamao would ended up together and happy

If the Emperor has a son with his Empress that child will be Crown Prince. Being first born is not a guarantee of preference. The Emperor nominates the Crown Prince from all his male children if there is no prince via the Empress.

Spoilers of the Light Novel! They kept swaping the babies back and back again for the funzies, by what Ah-Dou told us, since they were so similar. The late emperess did liked Jinshi more, but nothing yet (book 6) tells me that the emperess hated her own baby. It just happend that the emperess' baby died while in Ah-Dou's care (she didn't say anything about her lady-in-waiting so I don't think Ah-Dou suspects her). And when the baby died she was relived that jinshi was safe by the late emperess side but also sad that he couldn't seem as her son ever again, since Ah-Dou noticed that it was safer for Jinshi to be the now emperor younger brother.

The way it works is that the empress is whowever of the higher grade consorts who gives birth first to a male son (which becomes the heir of the throne). Theres no such thing related to nobility. Loulan aint a noble related to the royal family, she is just the Daughter of the chief of the Shi clan and she still managed to become a high level consort. Gyokuyou and Lihua are the same, Lihua's son were a boy, thats why he was called the prince and she would become the empress if her son hadnt died.

Now about why Maomao can. She is the daughter of Lakan, who at the end of the anime got married with Fengxian, making Maomao the Princess of the La clan. Lakan might seem like a crazy dude, but he is actually the second most powerful man in the whole empire. Even the emperror fears becoming his enemy. If the emperror would make Maomao into a consort she would imediatelly be a high level consort. the reason why she doesnt do it, its simply because she doesnt want it. But in the novel, a lot happend and the had no choice and she is going to meetings and political diners as the princess of the La Clan already.

@@DaarinAnime sorry but I’m just very pissed off at westerners for always misunderstanding and mislabelling us chinese especially our true culture which is not being properly portrayal well in films especially in foreign media but this is the only positive authentic representation of us chinese people and its made by a japanese media which is the only foreign media that has ever honoured us chinese by knowing how to represent our culture properly yet y’all westerners don’t know that and you westerners always behaving like you know so much about us chinese even we chinese ourselves don’t even know our own true authentic culture but at least some of us do like myself have you seen a hanfu now that’s what I call true authentic Chinese traditional clothes all the characters in this anime wears Hanfu also Loumen doesn’t even looked like a eunuch he looks more like an regular elderly chinese man in ancient Jin dynasty
