Are all four downpipes hot? Same temp? I would suggest a good strip and clean of the carbs, check the diaphragms for splits and the intake rubbers too. Then a carb sync if all is well. Clutch basket sounded a bit rattly, may just be my ears. Great video, looking forward to the next one.

They all get hot and i dont feel any difference across them. Ill be giving them a good clean when the engine comes out :)

Oh man I have been eyeing this exact bike a collector is selling. The one I’m lookin at is in pristine condition, having been kept as a reference bike for teaching how parts in bikes work as is mandatory for people who want a license where I’m from. I’m really on the edge of buying it. Looking forward to seeing your progress. I have a great reference manual for the xj650 series (Haynes), so write me if you need some information.

Change the air filter, they are so cheap and worth doing from service perspective. Can really help getting it running 100% smooth again. I learnt hard way after poor idle/running issues on my bike - pulled carbs out cleaned, balanced, messed about with idle settings this took hours! New filter was all it needed (even thou it looked fine).

You want to strip and clean those carbs and do the idle adjustment on a red hot engine doing it cold could cause it to idke shit when you finally take it for a ride and get It upto temp other then that great work.

Next time you do a oil change if your worried about oil not being in the whole engine case. pull the spark plugs and crank it for a little bit with the electric starter. Don't forget to cut the fuel with the petcock. other wise you will probably just flood it.

Nice vid , just revving the bike didn't bring me much further. Couldn't see what screws you were turning to get the idle adjustment. Would of been good if you had a light in there for the camera.
@samhough65026 жыл бұрын
You need to leave it running for a while on new plugs to tell if its running too rich. The soot won't deposit on the plugs that quickly. If I were you I'd be checking the valve clearances as well if it's not runing 100%. It's a bitch of a job but if it hasn't been done for a while then will only cause more issues down the line. Plus would be good to finally have a valve adjustment video on KZbin that was done with some enthusiasm and didn't send us all to sleep (excluding Ari Henning's one) haha!
@jishh6 жыл бұрын
Its something ill look into! Its all steps in the right direction ✌
@taxus7504 жыл бұрын
Carb balance is way out for a start, that's why it won't idle properly and it rattles (the camchain is trying to keep the engine in time). I'd also have checked HT leads and coils when changing the plugs. Bloody good bike the XJ650 - I had a red one years ago (late '80s) and I'd still have it were it not for a SMIDSY.
@RADIORUNNER19665 жыл бұрын
It most likely been said but this motorcycle has to have its carbs (4) synced with a x4 bubble device, then and only then will the engine run smooth and have the power it was designed to have ...
@jishh5 жыл бұрын
You are correct my friend
@BrianHarrisCISSP5 жыл бұрын
This is a Yamaha yics engine which connects the intakes together as well. It takes a special tool to block that off to properly sync them. The throttle shaft seals and carb boots almost always leak. The rack on these is a pain to separate as well

@ZippoVarga6 жыл бұрын
You'll be needing to re-jet the carbs. Your best bet right out of the box is to have them professionally tuned and ask the mechanic if you can watch the process of tuning and bench synchronizing them. When you adjusted the idle of each carburetor you were actually throwing any chance of the carburetors being in "sync" right out the window with each turn of the adjustments. Being synchronized and properly jetted for the air pods will mean the world of difference between a crappy running poor fuel economy bike and a seriously fun bike to twist the throttle on. With 7 bikes, many with multiple cylinders and being a small engine mechanic (Check my Channel), having the proper knowledge and tools is paramount to a smooth running bike from idle to wide open throttle. Keep the rubber side down (from across the pond) Zip~
@jishh6 жыл бұрын
Don't worry buddy! this will be on the cards on the final build back up as i know when iv taken the carbs off and put everything back together it won't be running too well until its been set up and tuned properly! For now i just wanted to know everything was working and there wasn't any underlying issues with the engine before i start pulling it apart
@ZippoVarga6 жыл бұрын
It sure sounds healthy and certainly worthy of your next build, there's no denying that. I did notice a little starter clutch slippage though. It's an easy enough repair if it becomes an issue later on down the road. By slippage I mean, the clutch that should be behind the stator is a roller bearing clutch usually with three or four rollers, as many plungers and springs and the springs get weak over time and the plungers become mushroomed. This weakens the grip the clutch rollers have and causes the clutch to slip making a distinct sound in the process and it can cause the clutch drum to also slip while the engine is running. It's nothing that will blow up and put the bike out of service and most Cafe` builders do a starter delete and make the engines kick start only anyhow. Really looking forward to this build Buddy. Zip~
@jishh6 жыл бұрын
I've actually been watching guides on this as it was mentioned! ill be doing it at some point :) i have to as this bike hasn't got a kick starter! Appreciate your comments though mate. so helpful and informative for me and others to see

your bike has excellent compression Jish hence the reason it fired right up, really you would only be looking to do a compression test on a bike that has problems starting which yours clearly doesn't buddy.
