Awesome techniques form the closed guard - all focus on the essentials of a winning closed guard: 1) break the posture 2) trap your opponent 3) position yourself for a submission 4) submit. Looking forward to watching more videos from Master Cavalcanti!

Agreed! I've been using this combination since I was a white belt,I added this to my play list in 2011. I also added in Roger Gracies back take arm bar combination so 5 attacks all from same grip breaks!

I've started learning all the ground techniques used in BJJ nowaday even before the Gracies started their world wide rampage of defeating everyone. I'm not in the same country than you. My country, France, was the country were the second disciple of Jigoro Kano sent abroad, the master Kawaishi, ended up teaching Ju-jutsu. Unlike Brazil, my country took the art and made a national federation, so that everyone could train That's why everything they know on GJJ, I've knowed it before it was cool

I learned Hapkido and Aikido before I learned BJJ. The early UFC completely changed my perception of martial arts. It showed that most of the traditional arts weren't really effective. Then watching Muay Thai fighter wreck Kung Fu and Karate "masters" in Thailand solidified this revelation for me. Now I train BJJ, Judo and Thai Boxing.

The two Gracie brothers were taught Ju Jutsu, they expanded on it and founded BJJ/GJJ and the expansion from other innovators has continued to this day. GJJ/BJJ has different take downs than Ju Jutsu, it incorporates other chokes, arm bars, leg locks etc. For example, just because something is labeled a guard pass, does not mean that it is the guard pass that came from Ju Jutsu. Look at Eddie Bravo's JJ techniques, or the BTTs - they are not traditional JJ.

... those peoples learning GJJ from the Gracies were in fact not interrested at all in self defense, but only on competitions. So they learnt from the Gracies, they learnt everything, but kept only the part they found usefull for competition. And that's those part they started to teach themself after. That's why there is the two term, GJJ and BJJ.

Basically, I've trained MMA since 21 years. The Ju-jutsu in my country, that come from master Kawaishi, is totaly the same thing that what is done into a MMA gym, for the sparring part. I fougth with MMA gloves even before they were so world wide commercialised. Fighting stand up, taking down the opponent then controlling him on the ground is what I've done in sparrings for more than 15 years, before the Gracies even showed up. Just because it was the will of Master Kawaishi in my country.

I studied at the Gracie Academy in Torrance and I studied BJJ under Paula Fernando. They are exactly the same thing. The difference was in teaching: Paula didn't hold anything back, whereas the Gracies seemed to keep a few things just for themselves. Also, at the Gracie academy we learned a few basic moves that others don't teach because they are ineffective (i.e. the guard pass where you put your arm between your opponents legs to break their guard. Sperry showed why this is bad technique)

+hezron cher The third trick is a very effective arm-trap for no-gi grappling. But you must reach the finishing position from a different starting position, normally in a flurry of movement, instead or relying on controlling the wrist with the gi. This is similar to what is called in wrestling a russian-knot grip, but from inside the guard. Very, very effective. And you can switch to a Baratoplata very easily!

Great video! I had a quick question. At 2:03 of this video you are hyperextending the elbow joint correct? I've tried the trap at 2:30 and got someone to tap, but I wasn't sure if they tapped due to their elbow being hyperextended or from the pressure put on their shoulder joint. So, you wanna trap their arm just below their elbow on their ulna/radius?
