Less frames, but when you sit up you have the powerful motion of sitting back which can be used to set up many things and you maintain the ability to both go supine or stand up.

I used to fall back into supine from seated position too until I realized I could just start there… Most people will retreat to supine against a passing opponent, which in itself proves that most people believe that their ability to prevent a pass is enhanced when they are supine. This is because you have more frames. I’ve seen way too many people get cart wheeled on, flying armbarred/triangled, and or blitzed passed from seated because they placed too much importance in creating a connection in a position where there are minimal frames.

I personally think you shouldn't play off of your back. I far prefer the mobility of sit-up guard as it allows you to wrestle-up.

Wrestling up is great 👏🏼👏🏼 but as an introductory guard to beginners and less athletic students, I’d have to disagree.

Seems like terrible advice. Sitting up forces them to one side and allows you to take grips before going supine. Supine is also one of the hardest positions to learn as you have to react very quickly to a ton of possibilities. Closed guard or half guard is much easier to learn and it slows down the pace, giving you more time to think. Lastly they mispronounced their own teacher's last name. A minor gripe, but how do you train with someone to black belt and don't know how to pronounce their name.

Closed guard is one of the, if not the most, strongest guard in jiu-jitsu. However, half-guard, for the same reasons that make closed guard so powerful, is not quite as efficient. For instance, in closed guard, you can flank around your opponent taking their back, sweep them, and submit them by creating a trilemma. In closed guard, you have the opponent locked between your legs and therefore can break posture and avoid exchanges that put you in oppositional danger. Half guard is, for all intents and purposes, a sweeping position. Instead of having your entire opponent between your legs, you only have their leg isolated. This creates a dynamic where your opponent can pass you if you make a mistake (in closed guard, they would have to open first, then pass). Half guard has also been seen to have terrible consequences in MMA and self-defense which leads to my next point. Sit Up Guard doesn’t exist in MMA outside of the confines of a technical stand up when there’s a safe enough distance to do so. Most fighters will assume a supine posture , throw up kicks or frame until they can transition to closed guard and or open guard. The same reasons why supine guard is more effective in MMA is why beginners and less athletic students will find playing supine guards (as their introductory guards) gives them more success. The utilization of more frames and distance management will keep them safer and in the game for longer. If you have any questions, I’m more than happy to answer them 🙏🏼 Osss
